阿蘇山は典型的な二重式の火山です。阿蘇山といえば、阿蘇五岳を中心にした東西にのびる連山を呼ぶことが多いですが、広い意味では外輪山や火口原をも含めた呼び名です。外輪山は南北約25km、東西約18km、周囲約128㎞もあり、世界最大級の火山です。火口原には約5万人が生活していて、田畑が開け、国道・鉄道がとおり、阿蘇市・高森町・南阿蘇村の3つの自治体があります。阿蘇山は日本の山で最初に外国の文献に記載され、当時からその名をとどろかせています。また、阿蘇は火の国熊本のシンボルであり、高岳を最高峰に根子岳、中岳、烏帽子岳、杵島岳と連なっている阿蘇五岳、ほぼ900mの高さで火口原を囲む外輪山等どれを取っても第一級の風景です。阿蘇が現在の山容になるまでは古い活動の歴史があり、10万年前、阿蘇が現在ある場所には数多くの火山があり、活発な活動をしていました。これらの火山が一斉に噴火活動をし、火山灰、溶岩などを噴出、この活動が終ると大陥没がおこって、今の外輪山の原形が生まれました。このくぼ地に火口湖ができ、立野付近で断層や侵食がくり返され、湖水が流れ出しました。3万年から5万年前に東西方向に並んで阿蘇五岳の山々が噴出したといわれています。
Mt. Aso is a typical double volcano. When people think of Mt. Aso, they often think of the mountain range that stretches from east to west with the five peaks of Mt. Aso at the center, but in a broader sense, the name also includes the outer rim and crater floor. The outer rim is about 25 km north to south, 18 km east to west, and has a circumference of about 128 km, making it one of the largest volcanoes in the world. About 50,000 people live in the crater floor, where there are open fields, national highways and railways, and three municipalities: Aso City, Takamori Town, and Minamiaso Village. Mt. Aso was the first mountain in Japan to be mentioned in foreign documents, and its name has been heard ever since. In addition, Aso is the symbol of Kumamoto, the Land of Fire, and the five peaks of Mt. Aso, with Mt. Takadake at the highest peak, Mt. Nekodake, Mt. Nakadake, Mt. Eboshi, and Mt. Kishima, and the outer rim that surrounds the crater floor at a height of almost 900 meters, all have first-class scenery. Before Aso took on its current shape, it had a long history of activity; 100,000 years ago, there were numerous volcanoes where Aso is now, and they were very active. These volcanoes erupted simultaneously, spewing volcanic ash and lava, and when this activity ceased, a large collapse occurred, creating the original shape of the current somma crater. A crater lake formed in this depression, and repeated faulting and erosion near Tateno caused the lake water to flow out. It is said that the Five Peaks of Aso erupted in an east-west direction between 30,000 and 50,000 years ago.
