Matsuyama(松山) in Ehime(愛媛) Prefecture is a charming city located on the island of Shikoku(四国). Known for its historical and cultural significance, the city is most famous for Dogo Onsen(道後温泉), one of Japan’s oldest hot springs, which has a history of over a thousand years. The main building of Dogo Onsen is a must-visit spot, with its traditional wooden architecture that evokes the charm of a bygone era. The bathhouse is not only a place to relax but also a cultural experience deeply connected to Japan’s ancient traditions.
Matsuyama Castle(松山城), another iconic site, sits atop Mount Katsuyama(勝山) and offers panoramic views of the city and Seto Inland Sea(瀬戸内海). Visitors can reach the castle either by hiking or taking a ropeway, making it an ideal spot for both history enthusiasts and nature lovers. The castle, originally built in the early 17th century, is one of the twelve original castles that still stand in Japan, and its well-preserved structure provides insight into Japan’s feudal era.
For literature lovers, Matsuyama is also the hometown of Natsume Soseki(夏目漱石), one of Japan’s most renowned writers. His novel “Botchan” is set in Matsuyama, and visitors can explore locations related to the novel throughout the city, including Botchan Ressha(坊っちゃん列車), a small steam locomotive that still runs through parts of the city today.
In addition to its historical attractions, Matsuyama offers a vibrant local food scene. Visitors can enjoy dishes like Tai Meshi(鯛飯), a local specialty made with sea bream, and various other fresh seafood options from the nearby Seto Inland Sea.

松山に住んでますが、道後を離れて25年ほど、滅多に行く事も無くなったけど、街並みの変わり様にビックリ😮
