Akiyamago is the name of an area along the Nakatsugawa River that straddles Tsunan Town, Nakauonuma District, Niigata Prefecture, and Sakae Village, Shimominochi District, Nagano Prefecture. This mountainous area is sandwiched between Mt. Naeba to the east and Mt. Torikabu to the west, and is one of Japan’s 100 most remote areas. There are eight settlements on the Niigata side and five on the Nagano side.

This time, I drove the Akiyama Line forest road that leads from Kayanodaira to Akiyamago. This road is a truly remote area with no houses along it, and because it is a heavy snow area, it is closed to traffic from November to May every year. The entire road is paved, but there are some narrow sections, so care should be taken when passing through.
