Thank you for being here 🙂 In this video, I visited Uchiko-town in ehime prefecture, the 5th prefecture out of my travel through all the 47 prefectures in Japan 🇯🇵

The Moon-Viewing Festival, a two-day event held on September 16th and 17th, coincides with the mid-autumn full moon. In the Youkaichi and Gokoku districts, handmade lanterns adorned with moon-themed tanka poems illuminate the eaves of houses, enveloping the town in a dreamlike atmosphere. I was unaware of this festival’s existence 😅, but fortunately, I was able to visit Uchiko at this time and thoroughly enjoy the festive ambiance for two days. During the stay, I had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Yamazaki, the representative of Ikazaki Shachu, a company that produces and sells traditional Japanese washi paper made in Uchiko town and Omori Yarousoku shop that has produced wooden wax candles from edo period. I also visited “Asahi-kan,” a long-standing, old-fashioned movie theater in Uchiko town. Later, I learned about a local dish from Oda District in Uchiko town called “tarai udon” and took a rickshaw ride to have lunch. Before leaving Uchiko, I met an Australian traveler, Talei, who was staying at the same guesthouse, and we explored the Uchiko town area together. We also had a great time with the super active and kind owner of the coffee shop “Sarai”, Mrs Matsuda made my journey in the town very memorable! The journey then continued to the next destination, Matsuyama city.

  1. Wow! There was so much to unpack in this video. All beautifully captured and narrated. I found Mr. Saito's story interesting. A professional IT technologist who gave up that career and business opportunity to become an artisan in a small community with an altruistic goal of sustaining a dying craft. I see that you apparently also have a soft spot for dogs too. As always, thank you for sharing the sights, sounds, people and cuisine of your country. I really appreciate the English narration. May all of your journeys be safe ones.

  2. Thank you for another amazing documentary on Uchiko, it's beautiful festivals, amazing people, delicious foods!, historic theatres, clean shops filled with so many interesting things. How I hope to visit there now. It was unknown to me before your video work. You are an excellent guide to Japan and it's wonders. And the food always looks so good. Interesting point made by the gilded-Washi Paper-making Craftsman on clean water for good paper will also result in exceptional Saki. Good to know.

  3. Your subtitles are excellent. It's been a great resource while learning to hear/speak Japanese ~ Arigato! The town is full of charm and life – truly a unique experience. Love the omotenashi culture throughout – Hopefully, we can visit and repay their kindness. Someday I will explore outside Japan's megacities and tour the countryside. Until then, がんばれ😊✌
