The Battleship Mikasa Museum is only a short 15-min walk from the Yokosuka Chuo Station (横須賀中央駅).
Built by Vickers shipyard in England, she was commissioned in 1902 until 1923. This 15,000t ship was most famous for its role as the flagship under Admiral Togo in the Japanese-Russo War in 1905. In the battle of Tsushima, she fired 124 twelve-inch shells, more than any other ship except Asahi’s 142. During the battle, she was hit more than 40 times during the battle, including 10 twelve-inch and 22 six-inch shells, but none caused serious damage.
Ironically, she was sunk at her moorings after a fire and magazine explosion at Sasebo, just 6 days after the Treaty of Portsmouth was signed. She was later refloated and repaired with more powerful six-inch and 45-calibre twelve-inch guns. Following the Washington Naval Treaty of 1922, however, she was decommissioned, and is preserved as a memorial ship in 1926. Confiscated by the US armed forces in 1945, she was returned to Yokosuka in 1948 but in poor condition. Due to funding issues, restoration works didn’t commence until 1959. In all, it took 2 years to restore her, and she was re-opened to the public in 1961.

Wow, she looks wonderful
Very nice place! I have visited it!! Do you see the below bridge o bridge of combat?
Very nice presentation..thank you. The Mikasa bares many similar gun platforms as the cruiser USS Olympia in Philadelphia @ Penn's Landing. They were both commissioned in the same decade. The Olympia is still floating (has been since 1945), but is in desperate need of a new hull… https://nationalinterest.org/blog/reboot/uss-olympia-oldest-floating-steel-battleship-afloat-182338 …I do hope when I get out to Japan next, I get to go and visit the Mikasa.
I was aboard her back in 1977, they have done so much with her. A lovely example of ships of her time.
НИПОН БАНЗАЙ !!!
How old is she ?
Horribly maintained
Still gorgeous
