Extra 20 temples#19 Kozai-ji
●About this temple
Founded by Gyoki at the foot of Mt. Katsuga during the Nara period.
At that time, it was called Katsugaji Temple.
Daishi rebuilt it and moved it to the site in the early Heian period.
It was selected as an imperial temple by Emperor Saga and was given the temple rokukan, and during the reign of Emperor Suzaku, it was selected as a Danjisho (academic school for monks).
During the Kamakura period, the local powerful clan Kosai Sakon-jo Kansaimura (the founder of the Kosai clan) rebuilt the hall and pagoda and renamed it Kosai-ji Temple at the behest of the Shogunate.
Later, Yoriyuki Hosokawa moved the temple to Honzu (Kosai Higashimachi), and the 11th head, Motosuke Kozai, changed the name of the temple to Jifukuji.
During the Tensho era, Chikamasa Ikoma became the lord of the country, and after rebuilding, the name was changed to Kofukuji.
In the first year of the Manji era, due to another misfire, it was decided to change to the old temple area.
Since then, I have settled into my current location.

In the 9th year of Kanbun, the feudal lord Matsudaira Yorishige built a new temple and the temple was renamed Kosai-ji Temple.
Afterwards, most of the original Shichido Garan was destroyed by accident.
The current building is part of that
The temple treasure standing statue of Bishamonten (made of a single piece of cypress, 101cm long, early Heian period) was designated as an important cultural property in November 1940.
