キリスト教が厳禁だった明治元年、潜伏キリシタン153人は長崎から安芸国廿日市まで船で運ばれた後、津和野街道を徒歩で約90Km移動し、この場所にあった光琳寺というお寺に収容されました。そして津和野藩の改宗のすすめに応じなかったため、拷問によって幼子も含め37人の命が奪われる事となります。
時代は変わり、1892年(明治25年)、乙女峠の隣の谷に葬られていた殉教者の遺骨は、一つのお墓に埋葬され、1946年(昭和21年)に広島市の長束修練院(現長束修道院)から津和野カトリック教会に赴任したネーベル神父（帰化後は岡崎祐次郎神父）が、1951年(昭和26年)にマリア聖堂を建設し、周辺も現在のような場所へと変えていったそうです。
マリア聖堂内の美しいステンドグラスには、拷問の様子など悲しい物語が描かれ、敷地内には「三尺牢」という立つこともできない檻に閉じ込めて行われた拷問の際にマリア様が現れ信者を励ましたという有名な場面の像(安太郎と聖マリアの像)や ”もっとも過酷だった”と覚書にある「氷責め」に使用されたとする復元された池、収容されていたキリシタンが使用したとされる復元された井戸と水洗い場や聖母と殉教者の碑があり、日本で唯一聖母マリアが降臨された地ともいわれている場所です。
敷地内にある2つの受話器を持った公衆電話は『デュエットフォン』と呼ばれているもので、恋愛成就に効果があると言われています。

In the first year of the Meiji era, when Christianity was strictly prohibited, 153 hidden Christians were transported by ship from Nagasaki to Hatsukaichi in Aki Province, and then made to walk about 90km along the Tsuwano Highway, where they were taken to a temple called Korinji, which was located here. Because they did not respond to the Tsuwano Domain’s recommendation to convert, 37 people, including young children, were tortured and killed.
Times changed, and in 1892 (Meiji 25), the remains of the martyrs, who had been buried in the valley next to Otome Pass, were interred in one grave. In 1946 (Showa 21), Father Nebel (who became Father Okazaki Yujiro after naturalization) was transferred from the Nagatsuka Novitiate (now Nagatsuka Monastery) in Hiroshima City to the Tsuwano Catholic Church, and in 1951 (Showa 26), the church was built, and the surrounding area was transformed into what it is today.
The beautiful stained glass in the Cathedral of Mary depicts tragic stories, including scenes of torture, and on the grounds are a statue (of Yasutaro and the Virgin Mary) of the famous scene in which Mary appeared and encouraged the believers during torture, when they were locked in a cage called the “three-foot prison” where they could not even stand, a restored pond that is said to have been used for the “ice torture” described in the memorandum as the “most severe,” a restored well and washing area that are said to have been used by the imprisoned Christians, and a monument to the Virgin Mary and martyrs, and it is said to be the only place in Japan where the Virgin Mary descended.
The public telephone with two receivers on the grounds is called the “Duet Phone,” and is said to be effective in helping people find love, whether true or false.
