A canal created 439 years ago, Hachiman-bori in Omi-Hachiman City, Shiga Prefecture.

The Hachiman-bor was developed in 1585 as part of the urban planning for the castle town. It served a dual purpose: a military role in defending the castle and a commercial role by utilizing the lake’s water transportation, which was a key part of logistics at the time.
The increase in the movement of boats and people due to the Hachiman-bor led to the development of commerce, and during the Edo period, it played a significant role in the town’s growth.

The 13.1-hectare area around the Hachiman-bor has been designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.
