今回は北海道の登別市にある「登別温泉街」をご紹介。
江戸時代から温泉の存在が知られており、明治時代に温泉宿が設けられてからは保養地・観光地となった。
「にっぽんの温泉100選・総合ランキング」では毎年上位にランクインしている日本有数の温泉地。
地名の語源はアイヌ語の「ヌプル・ペツ」（水色の濃い川）に由来している。
温泉街には、１０つの鬼像が存在。
温泉街にある観光地スポット「地獄谷」の存在により、 地獄谷の泉源が白い煙を立てて、
ぐつぐつと湧いている様子が「鬼の棲む地獄」のように見えたことから、鬼をシンボルとして起用。
また泉源公園の間欠泉は、約3時間の間隔で迫力ある音・湯気とともに、勢いよく噴き出す間欠泉を体感できる。
