熊野神社は、綿向山の麓にある熊野集落にあり、山岳信仰の御神体である綿向山を中心に活躍した修験道者達の拠点となっていたといいます。
熊野神社から綿向山へ入っていくと、「熊野滝（熊野飛滝神社）」があり、熊野神社の御神体として神聖な御滝を祀っているともいわれている。

鳥居後方の木には勧請縄が掛けられているが、湖東や湖南地方の神社では勧請縄に下がりものが吊るされているのを時々見かけることがある。
村の外から悪いものが入ってこないように張った結界と思われ、下がりものにはその集落特有の決まり事があるようです。
熊野神社の鳥居の前には「熊野神社のタコ杉」と呼ばれる巨樹があり、巨樹ぞろいの熊野神社でも異彩を放っています。
タコ杉は、タコが逆立ちして足が上向きになったような姿から名が付いたとされ、幹周７.３ｍ・樹高２５ｍで樹齢は推定で４００年とされる独特の姿をしたスギです。

Kumano Shrine is located in the Kumano village at the foot of Mt. Watamuki, and is said to have been the base of the Shugendo practitioners who were active around Mt. Watamuki, the sacred object of mountain worship.

As you enter Mt. Watamuki from Kumano Shrine, you will find Kumano Waterfall (Kumano Hitaki Shrine), which is said to worship the sacred waterfall as the sacred object of Kumano Shrine.

A kanjo rope is hung from the tree behind the torii gate, and at shrines in the Koto and Konan regions, you can sometimes see objects hanging from the kanjo rope.

It is thought to be a barrier to keep bad things from entering the village, and there seem to be rules specific to each village regarding the objects hanging from it.
In front of the torii gate of Kumano Shrine is a giant tree called “Kumano Shrine’s Octopus Cedar,” which stands out even among the giant trees of Kumano Shrine.
Octopus Cedar is said to have gotten its name from its resemblance to an octopus standing upside down with its legs pointing upwards. It is a unique-looking cedar with a trunk circumference of 7.3m, a height of 25m and an estimated age of 400 years.
