The Florida Keys Overseas Highway, from just north of Key Largo to Key West, is now an All-American Road.
The designation was announced Friday by Federal transportation officials, during a ceremony in Washington, D.C.
The Keys highway is the only All-American Road in Florida. It’s the highest recognition possible under the National Scenic Byways program established by the U.S. Congress in 1991. Only 30 other roadways in the nation have earned the prestigious title.
Originally completed in 1938, the Overseas Highway incorporates 42 bridges over the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Florida Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. They include the Seven Mile Bridge at Marathon, which stretches 6.79 miles across open water and was referred to on its completion as “the eighth wonder of the world.”
Under the Federal Highway Administrations National Scenic Byways program, roads can be recognized as National Scenic Byways or All-American Roads based on their archeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational and scenic qualities.
To earn All-American Road status, a thoroughfare must possess characteristics of national significance and features that don’t exist elsewhere, making it a visitor destination in itself.
The Overseas Highway follows a trail originally blazed in 1912 when Standard Oil millionaire Henry Flagler completed the extension of his Florida East Coast Railroad from Miami to Key West. Construction of the highway began after the railroad ceased following a 1935 hurricane.
In 1982, 37 of the original bridges including the Seven Mile Bridge were replaced with wider spans. Most of the historic bridges still stand alongside the newer ones and now serve as fishing piers for anglers.

actually I am exceptionally bright. yes, I watched the video and I understand the designation. I was being sarcastic about the name. Like near where I live Buffalo, NY is an "All American City". It sounds stupid to me… what, other cities are not All American? They should have came up with a different name such as "National Treasure" or something like that. just my opinion.

0:45 she's wrong about the tropical islands part. On the northern hemisphere, the tropics only begin at the tropic of cancer at 23.5 degrees north. the southernmost island, which I think is key west, is 24.5 degrees north, so this highway is not surrounded by tropical islands, they're subtropical 🙂
Well the 23.5 degree line is an imaginary line as you know. First, It' not that after 23.5 degrees, the nature and climate changes abruptly to sub-tropical. There's a gradual change from tropics to sub-tropics and it surely won't be visible in case of key west and florida in general due to maritime airmass. It is going to be tropical until much above key west and miami.Second, during summers, thermal equator moves to tropic of cancer. Koppen's classification helps.

Driving across the Florida Keys Highway is breathtaking to say the least. It felt like just us and the ocean out there. We're going to miss this place so much but will look forward to our next visit 🌊 🌊 🌊 💖💖💖
My home town is and will always be beautiful, you appreciate it more when you move and have to drive over 2 hours to reach a beach 😔
