The Birthplace of Switzerland – Rütli Meadow



Rütli is a mountain meadow on Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee), just under the village of Seelisberg, where Switzerland was founded in 1291.

In the 13th century, Swiss communities were in dispute with the Habsburg family. In order to form an alliance for mutual defence against the common enemy, the representatives of the three founding cantons met at Rütli in 1291. They took an loyalty oath (Rütlischwur) and formed the nucleus of the Swiss Confederation. This act is now seen as “the Birth of Switzerland”.

Today, Rütli is protected historical site. It can be can be reached only by foot from Seelisberg or by boat from Brunnen, Lucerne, Beckenried and Flülen.
