What a Supermarket in Japan is Really Like

This is a Japanese Grocery Store Supermarket Tour in Tokyo Japan. I’ve always wanted to show you inside of a Japanese supermarket and I finally got permission. So I’m going to be taking you around showing some of my favorite items as well as the prices included. Japan like most countries have grocery stores of all different sizes. In Tokyo they are generally smaller due to cost of real estate but this Japanese supermarket is relatively large for the city. It is a great example of what Japanese super markets have to offer. There are so many different types of Japanese food that it’s fun simply going inside and taking a look around.

  1. Love your videos Paolo 👏 but as so often when being in Japan or seeing videos like this, the amount of single use plastic is absolutely terrifying 😢

  2. Drinks section would be very interesting, as those tehnd to show not just local preferences but also reflect the culture and its rules. For example in Finland you won't find wines from supermarkets because just like in Sweden only the government run chain stores are allowed to sell drinks with alcohol over ~6% or so.

  3. is this like an average supermarket? or more high end? are there cheaper supermarkets than this? id be interested to see 😊

  4. Wow it's soo bright & organized! I would like to see the dairy/cheese section & frozen desserts. Does Japan have EBT Food Stamps like here in the US?

  5. Happy holidays Paolo and family. So nice to chill and catch up on some of your vids.

  6. So Hungry watching all that beautiful food 🍱
You have to be honest Paolo, all food is your favourite 😅

  7. Are there any western languages in that supermarket or you absolutely need to know Japanese or go shopping with an app or a translator?

  8. I think my family is in the very few unique tourists in Japan that visits a supermarke almost everyday. Like feeding 7 people with A5 wagyu with fried potato wedge, green salad, Sauteed mushrooms under JPY15,000 in unbeatable. Yeah, you do need to have some basic cooking skill but the quality and price cannot be beaten. We also love their sushi section and Deep fried phat oysters.😁😁😁😁

  9. I'd love to see the fresh produce section, especially the veggies and how much they cost.

    Happy holidays!

  10. The variety looks insane to me. I come from a small country and the market I go to has 2 soy sauces to choose from and our version of bento costs at least 10 euros and nobody buys it because the price is so absurd for its size. My favourite thing to buy is a chicken salad which costs 4 euros and it has like 10 grams of chicken max..

  11. Everything is top quality and extremely well organized Japanese are just on another level.

  12. A trifle is a British desert with cream custard and often some sort of fruits. That’s what you pick up at the end Paolo 😃.

  13. Hi Paolo, Firstly, merry Christmas!
Love your content, but I also want to see hidden things about Japan like not only good things but other stuff as well.

  14. The use of wood decor adds so much life and vibrance compared most of the western supermarkets which feels exactly what it is, a warehouse lol.

  15. Wow it’s so affordable compared to USA grocery stores! The prices of the bentos and large bento boxes are amazing 🎉🎉🎉

  16. This was almost my local grocery store. I waited just a little too long and somebody else bought the house I was looking at in the neighborhood.

  17. Does the average Japanese person go to a supermarket like this or those more well-off and for special occasions?

The food is affordable in terms of the quality you're getting, but overall would be very expensive if getting food from here every day. I don't think the average salary worker is spending $30+ dollars a day on meat or fish to cook each evening. Even the cheaper $7+ bentos, while very good value for a ready meal, isn't as affordable or nutritious as home cooked meat and veg. you can prepare yourselves in the UK.

Is this the type of supermarket the average Japanese family is going to? Or those on a lower, even median income?

Also when I visited Japan, all the fruit I saw was expensive as fruit over there is a treat for special occasions or given as gifts. In London, there is an abundance of fruit at way more accessible prices, I'd say a fifth of the price.

  18. I am interested in seeing what types of pickled vegetables they have. My favorites are onigirishiba (purple in color) and goma kombu (shredded). Love these on hot rice.

  19. Great supermarket and fair prices. How do you prepare those various meat dishes at home? Hotpot? Gourmet?

  20. The quality of Japanese supermarkets is on a level that other countries should really aspire to.

  21. I loved this. ❤❤I always try to see your day in life, but this was great . I want to see everything you did not show.and could you do a whole series on stores . Any kind of store you buy from (like the walmrt,Target, computer stores, even appliances).❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
