September 2019 update: The rules have changed! Now, you’ll only be able to book one stopover or one open-jaw, in addition to your final destination. This means you’ll be able to leverage the Aeroplan Mini-RTW to visit up to two places around the world, instead of three.

The Aeroplan Mini-RTW is by far one of the most powerful ways for Canadians (and everyone else!) to redeem miles for travel. By leveraging Aeroplan’s generous stopover policies, you can use your Aeroplan miles to book some truly spectacular trips.

In this video, we walk through the intricate rules and definitions behind the Aeroplan Mini-RTW (including stopovers, open-jaws, layovers, and Maximum Permitted Mileage or MPM), we talk about choosing the right Star Alliance airlines in your trip in order to minimize fees and fuel surcharges, and we delve into a few sample trips that I’ve taken to get the inspiration flowing.

It’s an incredible sweet spot, and here’s the thing – we don’t know if the Aeroplan Mini-RTW will still be around after Air Canada takes over the Aeroplan program in 2020! So if you’re interested in booking one for yourself, now’s the time to rack up the Aeroplan miles and make your dream trip a reality.

  1. Nice video with lots of relevant information, thanks for always providing quality content. Your S. America mini RTW itinerary is one I'd love to take as SA has been on my list now for a few years.

  2. Super-simple explanation and amazing video editing quality.

What do you recommend for us West-coasters to avoid fuel surcharges to get to Europe?

  3. Really hard to book ANA flights through aeroplan, guess everyone wants to flight with them and they get full very quickly

  4. In general I'd say it's a lot easier to find availability to Asia/Europe via the USA (especially since you tend to have more options for who to fly with since United doesn't impose YQ). My tip to add would be to search for routes in/out of the USA when planning your route and then just find some Air Canada or United flights to go between those US airports and your Canadian hub. ORD, EWR/JFK, LAX, SFO, IAD, etc. are all good places to look.

The other thing is that Aeroplan honors "sister airports" in the same city as being the same airport for stopover/layover purposes, so you can (for example), fly into NRT and out of HND, into JFK and out of EWR, etc. This can also make it easier to find availability.

  5. Beautiful job! Yet another reason why I need to move to Toronto from Alberta.. all these easily accessible global links from the busiest hub in the entire country to reap the full power of AP.

  6. Just got an email that makes some of these points invalid…it’s unfortunate that Aeroplan is cracking down on RTW trips

  7. Very helpful video! Just got off a 2.5 hour call and booked a 16-leg RTW! First agent was a dud but the second was willing to grind through it all.

  8. Hi !
Is this possible from somewhere else than Canada?
I am french and i would very much would like to give aeroplan a try 😀

  9. I just found out about you a few weeks ago and I'm hooked. Dude, first off, THANK YOU for the content and incredible value. Second, if you're ever in Calgary, drinks on me! Cheers!

  10. I hope to book a business class mini-RTW to Australia with Japan and Germany as my stopovers. I’ve never done this before, and there’s limited time left before Aeroplan nerfs the whole thing. I don’t know if I’ll be able to pull it off.

    Any assistance would be appreciated!

  11. When are you creating the video on how to search and actually book?

  12. I just stumbled upon your Channel today and I love your content! Question~ if I may~ I heard my friends would be buy economy class flight ticket and then use their pts to upgrade to business class – apparently that's smarter and saves more pts? IDK if that's true.

  13. Should you pay for airline ticket taxes with Aeroplan miles or is there another way to reduce them?

  14. Love this channel Richard – if you're in Toronto let's link up for some ZTeca.

  15. Just did a trip from Toronto to the Bahamas using WestJet $ on the way down (still had to pay about $100 in taxes) and a free flight back using the sign up bonus from a new Scotiabank Passport card (no transaction fee card). With the new knowledge I will be aiming for a business class flight to Europe this summer – thanks for all the info!

  16. Thank you your videos are very entertaining I have yet to try your techniques they do look good

  17. If you're looking for more content to create, since there's not much travel right now… can you make more videos like these with hypothetical sample itineraries and the cards to get there? These are so helpful!

  18. Hello Ricky, I have been enjoying your videos since I subscribed to your channel. I did mini RTW in November 2018. 210,000 Aeroplan miles. YYZ- VIE-BKK-NRT-YYZ. Stopped in BKK with a side trip to Myanmar to run Marathon Bagan. Your recent video about AMEX platinum card helped me to substantially discount the price of the tickets Downunder. I hope that covid will be well under control prior to our departure next February. Thanks!

  19. That's awesome Richie I like it how you pulled out that that's one F-bomb in the video can like you saw your ex wife cheating on you again

  20. So very interesting video. My dream Mini-RTW would start in Montreal and include New-Zealand, Japan and Paris as a last stopover before returning home in Montreal.
Now, if this is feasible, would it be better to book now or wait for the new set of rules in November ?
    Merci

  21. Thanks Ricky for another great video. Would you please do another complex example of RTW trip but in more details? For example of a trip I'm planning for Jan 2021 but don't know if it's possible with aeroplan. EXP: 1st segment YYZ-JFK-AUH-MLE(stay 1wk) 2nd segment MLE-AUH(stopover few nights)-ICN(stay 1wk) 3rd segment ICN-TPE(stopover few nights)-SGN(stay few wks) from here I'll pay out of pocket with Emirate first class back to London and from here 4th segment LHR-IST(stopover few nights)-YYZ. I already checked individually that all these flights are available on aeroplan website (excluding the Emirate portion). But not sure if I can book multiple segment like that and still allow a stop over for an extra 5000point within each segment or if this is the best way of using the aeroplan point. Any suggestions? I'm probably going to reach out to you via your website to consult this when you are back to Canada. Stay safe, hope to talk to you soon.

  22. Aeroplan better than ANA or Cathay's programs for RTW? Hoping to take mom on a big trip in 2023! Thanks for this helpful info.
