今回は、奥尻島の「宮津弁天宮」を紹介。
「宮津弁天宮」は中津島神社とも呼ばれ、島のように見える岩の塊の上、高い位置に神社が鎮座します。
昔は、対岸の北海道本土との連絡拠点・見張り拠点として、ここに番所を置いたそうです。
その後、改めて広島の厳島神社より宗像三女神が祀られ、天保12年(1841)に祭神(長女の澳津島姫命)が奥尻地区に移され、現在の澳津神社となりました。
以降は「宮津弁天社」や「中津島神社」とも呼ばれています。
この岩山には、古くは９世紀頃のオホーツク文化の遺跡(宮津遺跡)や、16?17世紀頃のアイヌの砦であるチャシ(宮津チャシ跡)が築かれていたと考えられ、その ”チャシ” は ”茶津” (宮津の旧名)の語源になったと言われます。奥尻海峡を行き来する舟を見渡せる場所であり、神社が建立される以前から奥尻島において重要な場所であったと思われます。
本殿は大正2年に改築、昭和45年に新築建て替え、平成11年に改築されています。島内最古の神社祭祀の場所として、また景勝地として重要であることから、町指定有形文化財となりました。

This time, we will introduce “Miyatsubentengu” on Okushiri Island.
“Miyatsubentengu” is also called Nakatsushima Shrine, and the shrine sits high on a rock mass that looks like an island.
In the olden days, it was said that the bansho was set up here as a contact base and lookout base with the mainland of Hokkaido on the opposite bank.
After that, the Three Goddesses of Munakata was enshrined again from Itsukushima Shrine in Hiroshima, and in 1841, the deity (the eldest daughter, Princess Mitsushima) was moved to the Okushiri area and became the current Mitsushima Shrine.
After that, it is also called “Miyazu Bentengu” or “Nakatsushima Shrine”.
It is believed that the Okhotsk culture ruins (Miyazu ruins) around the 9th century and the Ainu fort Chashi (Miyazu chashi ruins) around the 16th and 17th centuries were built on this rocky mountain. Is said to have become the origin of the word “Chatsu” (former name of Miyazu). It is a place where you can see the boats going back and forth in the Okushiri Strait, and it seems that it was an important place on Okushiri Island even before the shrine was built.
The main shrine was rebuilt in 1918, rebuilt in 1970, and rebuilt in 1999. It has become a tangible cultural property designated by the town because it is important as a place for the oldest shrine ritual on the island and as a scenic spot.
