In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about Tibetan Spaniel that you might not know.

A Quick Overview:
Group: Companion Dogs
Weight: 9 to 15 pounds
Height: Up to 10 inches tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 12 to 15 years

The Tibetan Spaniel is a small dog with a long history. Bred in Tibetan Buddhist lamaseries to be companions and alarm dogs, they were popular gifts to foreign dignitaries. Today the little canine ambassadors are still prized as companions, thanks to their sweet, smart, and attentive nature.

Said to resemble a little lion, a powerful Buddhist symbol, he retains the watchfulness bred into him centuries ago and can be aloof toward strangers, but he’s a fond and friendly family companion. Tibbies, as they’re nicknamed, are active enough to enjoy dog sports such as agility, but not so demanding of exercise that they’ll run you ragged. Their portable size makes them suited to any home, from apartment to estate, as long as they have plenty of human attention.

When they’re not cuddling with their people, Tibbies enjoy a high perch that allows them to see everything that’s going on. They’ll climb on whatever piece of furniture gives them the best view, giving them the reputation of being catlike.

Like many small dogs, they prefer being approached at their own level rather than having someone looming over them. They’re highly intelligent and take well to training when it’s accompanied by positive reinforcement techniques such as praise, play, and food rewards. Tibetan Spaniels are sensitive to the moods and needs of their families and they’re happy to try and meet them. This loving breed is uncommon, but he’s the ideal match for the right homes.

  1. Just lost my little Tibby … his name was Peanut and he lived to be an unbelievable 19 yrs old. I am grieving so much because he was so bonded to me and the most wonderful, loving little dog imaginable. He was so beautiful and his coat was so soft. I am missing him so much .. think he hung on all those years just because he knew I needed him so much!!

  2. I would have added Cherry Eye as a known health issue with them. We just got a new Tibbie puppy we named Alfie and he is still in his crazy puppy phase but he's also very sweet and loving when he's not being crazy.
We were warned by the breeder that Cherry Eye is a known issue that started very shortly after we brought him home. I learned how to tuck it back in and am now a master at it. He will be getting surgery to correct it when he's neutered.
Other than that though, he's an amazing dog who loves to follow me around and snuggle!! 🖤

  3. My tibbie is extremely smart and it kinda scares me that she seem to understand her family like she learned the English language. I rescued her from a abusive home. I watched her as she was suffering and getting beat in a cage. The min my eyes seen that I told the owner she don't have a dog anymore I'm taking her. I let him know if he have a issue with me taking his dog to fight me. I knew that person couldn't fight so he set there while I took his beat up dog straight to the vet and became her owner. This was in 2017, I still have my dog and she is very loved, loyal and healthy. Thanks for the video, I needed it.

  4. I looked into Tibetan Spaniels because I met one who used to hang out on the library steps at Duke University. That was the most self-possessed dog I've ever encountered. It's like that dog knew WHO he was, whereas most dogs just know WHAT they are.
I've had Cocker Spaniels riding on my motorcycle with me for 8 yrs now. When I inquired about riding with a Tibbie, here's what a breeder wrote me…
"This particular breed of dog is not one that I could comfortably say would do well on a motorcycle. They do not like to be restrained in any type of way for very long periods of time. When we travel with them, we normally have a large cage set up so they can get up and move around, otherwise they are constantly howling and barking. That is not to say that there aren't the rare special cases out there where they don't mind. I know this litter though and do not see that being the case."

  5. I had my tibbie last summer. Since then, she broke so many dog stereotypes I had in a good way. The treats I give her when I go out, she won't eat before I come home. Although she's weary of human strangers, she adores her fellow canine friends. or every other dogs really. She is so friendly she absolutely HAS to go to say hello to every single dog she encounters from her walk, even if they are big scary ones(she had some bad experiences with very excited big dogs) So now I know pretty much every dog owners of my town thanks to her! She doesn't bark and expresses her feelings by just…..silently staring me like I'd know what she wants but of course I'd do, right?! Then she will come to me and happily lick my hands arms foot everywhere she can while comfortably laying on my laps, like she's grooming me. Sometimes I wonder if she's not secretly a cat-mix😂 I really love her for all her quirks and do recommend tibbies to everyone who are looking for small companion dog.

  7. Just recently lost my Tibby Minnie, we rescued her when she eas abandoned after neing purposely blinded. We never loved an animal so much, in fact he was a sweet beloved member of our gamily. The sweetest, vsmest little pup ever. Have us much happiness.

  8. I thought i had a long hair chihuahua until i was stopped a few times telling me he was a Tibetan spaniel

  9. I have an adorable little tibbie . His name is ozzy he is so smart and loving. He is a cuddler. He will be 2 in September. He has a nepalian syndrome when around bigger dogs. He plays well but is very vocal
    Love him so much.

  10. I have a beautiful little tibbie named Rio. He will ve turning 5 soon. He is extremely adorable and strangers often stop and compliment his beautiful eyes.

  11. I am so sorry for you your pain. These darling souls leave such a hole in our hearts when they go. I lost my TT 5 years ago. Not yet able to get another, so looking at one of these.

  12. My tibby is just like these babies but she is loyal and doesn’t like separation from me, but she never barks and won’t let me hug her or sit on my lap. I don’t know y

  13. I adopted a tibbie her name is Penny, I got her before noticing her terrible teeth! The previous owner wouldn't go half on her dental work and I can't afford all the extractions she will need. She's 12 now and teeth don't seem to bother her but her breath ugh! She won't let me play in her mouth and has lost a few teeth over the years, terrible under bite. But I still love her to death. Now she's deaf.

  14. Best breed I have ever kept intelligent, loving, playful, social.. more closely related in behavior and personality to their cousins TMs

  15. Absolutely agree with tms3749. 5 years ago I had to put my Tibbie down due to back issues. She was my Service Dog, and a beloved part of me. DO NOT let them jump up or down from beds, sofas, chairs, porches, cars, anything. Carrying or placing them is not spoiling given the alternative. I adored her and am looking for a rescue.

  16. my uncle had one. tomorrow will be a week since he's not with us anymore. last couple of years my mom took care of him most of the day. we took a lot of walks and he loved car rides. he was great guy. it wasn't my dog, but i miss him so very much

  17. My tibbiei is very loving, and loyal to me , if I take out for a walk, she is very aggressive and angry when she sees other dogs or people. I am beside myself. I don’t know how to handle her. I got her from the ASPCA, she just turned 1 when I got her, she is now 3 years old, turned 3 on 4/26/25. I am the 2nd owner. I have a pretty good idea why the first owner turned her over to ASPCA. But with me she is an angel. Have any suggestion on handling her behavior. Walking her is like having a bull on a leash, she is 20 lbs, I need a double leash to control her. I hired a dog walker , she quit on me because she was an aggressive walker, never ha a pet like her, by the way, her name is Bella and I adore her.

  18. My tibbie was stolen. I live in area where most houses, like 95% are vacation homes. It was in October he just disappeared. Next year in April the backyard doors were open as always during spring, and he just walked straight into the kitchen. The theory is that someone took him when they were leaving their summer house, kept him the entire winter in the city or whereever they live and next spring when they returned to their vacation house he ran from them and returned home. I can't describe the shock, and remember thinking was it just a nightmare because he acted like he never ever ever was gone.
