Boxer dogs were originally bred to be medium-size guard dogs. Developed in Germany, Boxers are intelligent, high-energy, playful dogs that like to stay busy.

In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Boxer Dog that you might not know.

A Quick Overview:
Group: Working Dogs
Weight: 60 to 70 pounds
Height: 21 to 25 inches tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 10-12 years

Boxers are large, muscular, square-headed dogs who look imposing – that is until you look into their eyes and see the mischief and joy of life reflected there. Because of their playful nature and boundless energy, they are sometimes called the “Peter Pan” of the dog breeds. Boxers aren’t considered fully mature until they are three years old, meaning they have one of the longest puppyhoods in the world of dogs.

The typical Boxer is intelligent, alert, and fearless, yet friendly. They’re loyal to their family and love to play with them, but they’re also headstrong, especially if you try to use harsh training methods with them.

With minimal grooming needs and legendary patience and gentleness with children, Boxers are great family companions, as long as you provide them with the physical exercise and mental stimulation they need. If you’re willing and able to provide them with adequate exercise in the form of walks or runs, they can even adapt to apartment living, so long as they are able to be close to their beloved people.

Boxers are renowned for their great love of and loyalty to their families. They often are distrustful of strangers at first, but will not be aggressive unless they perceive a threat to their families. Boxers are so loving that they often think they are lapdogs and try to lie as close to you as possible.

  1. We had Boxers from the late 90's thru 2010. They are incredibly loyal and protective, especially with children. They are the clowns of the dog world. I miss my dogs.

  2. Good video — love looking at those sweeties. However, I would say that Boxers are not LARGE dogs, really. They are medium dogs, and some males can be on the large side. But as a breed it is medium: stocky, muscular, and powerful, but not especially LARGE.

I also think a bit much is made of their courage. They are smart dogs, and sensitive, in my experience (I have had two absolutely wonderful girls). Like intelligent beings, they fear what should be feared: in one example, my Boxer feared lightning when it got dangerously close to our mountain chalet balcony. She was brave but not foolish: she was right to fear/avoid the lightning.

  3. Another thing: If they are not running through mud, and don't have fleas, they hardly EVER require showering/bathing. Incredibly fragrant dogs. Since Boxers tend not to be fond of water immersion, I wouldn't bathe them unless they really need it. Also, contrary to the video, there is NO need to clip Boxer dog nails if they walk frequently on asphalt or paved surfaces. Their nails will wear suitably just by that. I wish I had known this before my first pup (and wasting money on the pointless nail clippers)! Not only do you save yourself time, but you also avoid risking harming your dog by inadvertently clipping tissue instead of nail (ouch!).

  4. My Boxer is literally my best friend, I named him Broly and he’s just as big and strong as the real Broly 👍🏽

  5. My companion is Frida, a 7 years old Boxer. She is so special; she will never be replaced in my heart.

  6. I've had boxers for the last 25 yrs. I actually have 4 right now. They are the best dogs. Once you own a Boxer your hooked no other dog will do.

  7. I do love boxers. They are prone to cancer and ACL tears. Everyone of mine passed from cancer. They are a fantastic family dogs! They are the clownsnof the dog world! Everything is fun!

  8. when training my boxer I got good results with food. but like they said this dog runs a little hot, so I got some amazing results when I started using water as a reward… her recall sucked when she just got food, but when she knew she was gonna get a drink, shoo wee she couldnt come fast enough. Water was a game changer for our training.

  9. I thought I was loyal to the APBT breed until I got my first Boxer three years ago in the middle of COVID. She is absolutely amazing! I definitely agree about them having long puppyhoods! She’s 70lbs and laying on top of me as type this comment 😂 They are such entertaining, playful, sensitive, protective, and loving dogs!

  10. I miss my Boxer who died about 6 1/2 months ago. There weren't any available from reputable breeders near me, so I adopted a mix from the pound. They said she's an American Bully mix. She is also part lab. And I think she has a little Boxer, too. After having har for almost 5 1 1/2 months I miss my Boxer even more. My puppy is beautiful and sweet. She's gentle with the kitties – a must for my home. And she's learned faster than any dog I've trained. But she's not my Boxer.

I miss the way my Fiona would exaggerate a slow lope in between zoomies to make me laugh as her eats and jowels flopped. And we'd try to sneak off behind a tree or car to hide from each other. She'd come running to me as fast her feet could thunder when she saw me or if I called. There is just no replacing a beloved Boxer.

  11. I think they left out the part about not ever being able to go to the bathroom by yourself as mine always seem to follow me there. And my female boxer likes to drink our shower water for some reason. Anybody else have this with their boxer? They left out the farting too…..

  12. Boxers can weigh a lot more than 70 pounds. Our last one, a male, was almost 100 pounds, but he looked great!

And bred to be "working dogs"–that's a laugh. The only thing they work on is playing.

  13. I had a boxer she was roughly 13.. she passed away due to seizures from a heart murmur.. one day it just happened. Rip Roxy ❤

  14. Boxers are awesome! I had my Zoe 13 years, when my son was born that was her boy, she was inseparable from him, anywhere he was she was and as he got older she would choose to sleep with him no matter what, an amazing dog that gave me and my family 13 years of happiness and despite what a lot of people think they respond well to training and like it, they love to be praised for anything they do, makes training very easy and fun!

  15. I have a black boxer who literally follows me everywhere i go, he is the best boxer ever and he is very protective over me and my husband.

  16. Our was white. Couldn’t hear very well. 75 lbs and super smart. Would absolutely attack strangers if they were aggressive. Far stronger than you would expect. I was 210 at 5 7. Lifted weights all my life. But. She was hurting my arm playing with rope. Yanking and twisting like a pit bull. Never underestimate, she got into it with a 165 lb mastiff. She was winning. We had no idea. It was because the mastiff had bone cancer, passed shortly after this. She knew we didn’t. Mastiff belonged to a friend. 2 babies were using her to stand up, about 2 years old. Their dad came up to pick them up. Almost got his face removed. My daughter caught her in the jump. The guy was a jerk. Take note.

  17. If I had Two pet Boxer dogs if one’s a boy and one’s a girl I would name them William Junior and Layla and Layla would have Two puppies named Laura and Lenny

  18. A Boxer will not allow sad…..groochie , and a master who doesnt allow they in the "family"…….they need interaction w/ humans…..they'll protect 100%

  19. I’ve owned eight dogs, and five of them were boxers. IMO, they are (almost) the perfect dog breed. (Their lack of longevity is their only negative.)
