With his strong expression and attentive manner, ears up and tail shaking, the Smooth Fox Terrier puppies give us a mental picture of a dog that is always prepared to go anywhere and undertake any given task.

In this video, we have listed the top 10 interesting facts about the Smooth Fox Terrier.

A Quick Overview:

[Group: Terrier Group]
Weight: 18 pounds (male), 15-17 (female)
Height: 15½ inches
Life Expectancy: 12-15 years

The smooth fox terrier breed stands over a lot of ground but with a short back. It is a combination of speed, strength, and power, allowing it to run and stick around the hounds and horses throughout the hunt and to keep an eye on a fox in a narrow track.

Smooths are very much like their cousins, Wire Fox Terriers. They stand close to 15.5 inches at the shoulder. The unique physical attribute, other than their coat, is their head: A Smooth’s head is more V-shaped than that of a Wire’s. The thick, level coat is purely white, with dark and tan markings.

Suiting their solid chasing nature, the Smooth-coated Fox Terrier has a sharp sense of smell, great vision and surprising resilience to complete their tasks. The smooth terrier can be trained effortlessly, however, he needs a solid hand to control his longing to chase. This breed is most joyful when active.

As a friend, the Smooth Fox Terrier is tender and defensive. He makes a decent watchdog yet with a little bit of an inclination to be vocal.

The Smooth-haired Fox Terrier is usually depicted as a curious, lively, brave, vivacious, naughty, perky, bold, and free puppy. It is devoted to exploring and very much fond of chasing. What’s more, some Smooth Fox Terriers are excessive barkers and diggers.

  1. Hey, that's my dog Toby at 4:46. He loves his time on the canoe, especially when we encounter ducks on the river. Proud of my little dog brother, he is on the right path to becoming internet star.

  2. The first 2 years can be hell with these dogs. After that it gets easier. Lol

  3. We have 2 SFT females in the family. One is 1yo., whilst the other is 11/2yo. They are both wonderful dogs, we love them.

The first one is tan and white, so athletic and lives to play and do tricks, pirroets, being so alert and fast.

The second one is black and white, proving to be quite opposite and loves to cuddle and be conpanuable.

They are very social and live with a cat.

  4. Why would you trim a smooth fox terrier? Also behaviourally it must be a very mixed up human who cannot keep a foxie well behaved. Of all breeds I have found them as the best at taking correction. No hard feelings, no injured ego, just say got it, and that's it. Never shout when they take off because they just think you have joined the chase. If you wait till the prey has bailed up a tree, under the stoop or whatever, you call in a calm voice to come away and praise them even if it takes a while.

  5. All proud SFT owners may join their own facebook page Smooth fox terrier nation. You will love to interact with other SFT parents around the world.

  6. I plan to get a smooth fox terrier! My only concern is my adult cat. I think I can train him to leave the cat alone. Your video seems to think smooths have to be alone.

  7. It's interesting to learn that my dog, Dexter, is quite big for his breed. He weighs about 23 lbs last I took him to the vet. He also stays in the yard, which is not fenced in. He knows his boundaries and seldom leaves the yard. Most other things, I found to have already learned through experience.

  8. I had a toy fox terrier & he was an alpha. Her used to lead a grp of dogs, including a great dane. He was great

  9. Spot on. My terror is sometimes a bit scitso to ha ha ha. So much energy. My young Pitbull just can't keep up…

  10. I have two rodents could I teach it not to attack them as they are in a glass cage so he could not chew through it

  11. I have a smooth Fox pit she is a really good dog she listens to me well just nervous for when she gets older because she don’t listen to my 18yr old daughter I think it’s just because she is only 4 months old just would like to break her out of the habit and have her listen to her. She absolutely loves my daughter probably more than me but she is disobedient to her. She isn’t as energetic as this video says tho we play fetch for about 15 minutes and she is sleeping five minutes later all in all she is a very good and smart dog we had her housebroken in a week at 8 weeks old

  12. Thank you so much for this video! I drive semi, my first night with her in the semi I thought I heard someone knock on the side of my truck and as a puppy she jumped up Hunter is up and started barking come to find out it was just a truck passing next to me on an on-ramp with a clunky trailer. As a puppy I expected her to mess in the semi because she is a puppy but she hold it in and patiently waited for me to wake up and take her out so she could use the bathroom which instantly after she hit the grass she did. She seems to be an extremely smart dog and I absolutely love her all she wants to do is cuddle and play. I have a Florida Black Mouth Cur pitbull mix and a Mastiff Pitbull lab mix and she chases them around the yard like a monster and they absolutely love her.
I also have twin two-and-a-half-year-old boys we have to chase her around and she absolutely loves it and they absolutely love her as well. I kind of bought her on an Impulse buy so I can have a dog for my truck and I didn't realize just how good of a companion these dogs are

  13. These facts are not all true about a smooth Fox Terrier. They don’t pick fights with other dogs they have beautiful temperaments.

  14. Had Fox terribles my whole life, smooth vs wire haired, quite simply they are totally different dogs. The smooth actually has a brain

  15. I had a SFT and it was my favorite dog of all time. If you don't honestly have an hour a day to spend with one, don't get one. She required vigorous daily exercise sessions of about 45 minutes to be content (e.g., fetch, frisbee, running, etc.). Otherwise, she'd start to lose it a little. She responded well to positive reinforcement and loved learning new tricks She had a great sense of humor. She could be beautifully irreverent and was likely to do the unexpected, which is why SFT's should always remain leashed unless in a safe, enclosed area. She was great as a hiking companion who would happily hike all day without complaint. She competed well in frisbee dog competitions. She was also a great dog to watch a movie or TV with. She would lay sleeping next to me as I watched (always in contact) and would make the most interesting groans of contentment to let you know that all was good in the world for her. I sure miss her.

  16. I have a 12 year old and recognize many of the traits you describe. He was about to be put down in the local pound and I got him out between Christmas and New Year 10 years ago. With his now white muzzle he looks about 12 but within the space of 2 weeks 2 different vets told that judging from his teeth he was, for one, 1 1/2 and for the other 21/2 years old. I settled for 2 and for the chip he got a fictitious birthday. I had adopted a female "sort of" Jack Russell which was 4 months old when he arrived so that was not a problem but believed that having a cat would not be possible. I was proved wrong, he lives today with 2 cats, one of which is his best friend! I adopted also 5 years ago a 10 year old Jack Russell and have had to separate them several times over the years. He also comes from a pound but loves cats and they love him. I have only seen in the last 6 months the 2 males eat from the same dish at the same time. The little female on the other hand will share food with anybody, cat or dog. The 15 year old JR is showing his years and has a heart treatment so he'll be with me up to the end, but the end is very definitely getting closer. Zeb, the fox, (Zebedee or Zebulon here in France) has been an experience and when it will be his turn he will be missed.
