The West Highland White Terrier also known as westie shares a history with that of the Dandie Dinmont, Skye, Scottish, and Cairn Terriers; they are all considered branches of the same breed.

In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Westies that you might not know.

A Quick Overview:

[Group: Terrier Group]
Weight: 15-20 pounds
Height: 11 inches (male). 10 inches, female
Life Expectancy: 13-15 years

The West Highland White Terrier is a bold, confident, fun-loving, intelligent dog who can find joy in the simplest pleasures of life, such as squeaky toys, a belly rub, and food. His happy disposition and love of life make him a favorite for many, in spite of his mischievousness. He doesn’t lack any self-esteem, but he’s not so overbearing in his confidence that his self-assurance becomes a negative trait. He is friendly and gets along with everyone, and he enjoys being part of his family.

Westies are generally healthy, but like all breeds, they’re prone to certain health conditions. Not all Westies will get any or all of these diseases, but it’s important to be aware of them if you’re considering this breed.

Because the Westie has a hard coat, bathing too often can be more harmful than helpful. But, no worries! To support West Highland’s rough coat and delicate skin, an adult dry dog food formulated with specific amino acids, fatty acids and flax seeds – Royal Canin breed health nutrition could be a great kibble for your westie.

  6. My Westie, Nina, had a loud bark. And I mean, loud! It was startling. She was also stubborn and hard to control at times. Wanted to eat everything she could, edible or not. But SUPER friendly and sociable. Went up to nearly everyone we came across and greeted them like they were best friends. Also, super loyal and just wanted to be near us. I miss her dearly.

  11. My partner has 2 westies. They are ruined and are everything that I don't want in a dog. The male thinks
is the boss with my partner. He does pretty much as he is told when I am with him. A real pain in the backside otherwise. The female is more amenable, thankfully. They get 2 wee half hour stroll a day with my partner. Me, 2 hours. They go home and sleep.

  14. Don't fall for their cuteness their eviilll…I'm just kidding but they do give you a run for your money. you need a lot of energy and time to take care of them. They "expect" to be played with all day.

  15. My westie is only 10 months and is very playful but doesn't take No for an answer or he might get aggressive

  16. Our current Westie, Molly, is our fifth Westie. We have had one since 1970. Muffy joined our family when I was stationed in England.
Since then we have had Misty, Maddie, Katie and now Molly. Each had their own personality but all were true Westies, spunky and lovable. Wouldn't have any other breed !!

Latest gift for her a licking May, but it does’nt last long. Any tips please.🙏

  20. I had my Westie named Westley for one month shy of 18 years! When I was young I wanted to be a screenplay writer and made many movie scripts with him as the main character, then when I was in a high school TV Production class I filmed a mini-movie parody of Forrest Gump with Westley as the star! At the beginning of the movie, instead of the iconic feather coming down, I put a dog biscuit on a string flying through the air and it landed on the park bench with Westley where he told his story about his life! 😹🐶❤️

  21. I have 4 Westies, the parents and their two daughters. They are all fixed now. Love them.
