In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the American Cocker Spaniel that you might not know.

A Quick Overview:
Group: Sporting Dogs
Weight: 24 to 28 pounds
Height: 1 foot, 2 inches to 1 foot, 3 inches tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 12 – 15 years

American Cockers are cheerful intelligent dogs with a lively curiosity and they make ideal companions. They are adaptable and suit both town and country-dwellers but are demanding of the owners’ time. They have great personalities and are known to be mischievous with minds of their own, owners need to be gentle and patient with these dogs. Novice owners would be advised to speak to an expert before purchasing.

The well-bred Cocker Spaniel has a sweet temperament. He is affectionate and cuddly and loves to participate in family activities. He is playful, alert, and active, enjoying any exercise from a brisk walk to hunting in the field.

The Cocker is known to be a sensitive dog, mentally and physically. He has a “soft” personality and does not respond well to harsh treatment, sometimes turning to growling or snapping when he’s in pain or afraid. Early socialization and training is essential to teach the Cocker appropriate canine manners. He needs to be handled carefully and kindly to bring out the best in his personality.

The American Cocker has quite a few health problems although many can be treated and with proper care and attention the incidence of others will be lowered. Pups should always be chosen from healthy stock and it is particularly important to do so in this breed because of the number of potential problems. Purchasers should insist on seeing a current eye certificate for both parents because of the number of eye problems in this breed. It is important that the certificate is current as some problems, e.g. cataracts, may not appear until the dog is several years old.

  1. How playful, alert, and active is your American Cocker Spaniel?
Let us know in the comments!

  2. I got one, buuuut I thing they instaled a pitbull software into him 😂 that dog jus doesnt give a fu€k, he actualy went after a rotveiler and send him running ( Oh and its not that I play fetch with him, he plays fetch with me 😂 he takes the ball and makes me to run after him )

  3. My family and I have had three female Cocker Spaniels and I love the breed. Libby was my first Cocker Spaniel as she lived till she was almost 19 years old. When Libby passed a part of my heart died too. I currently have two Cocker Spaniels Elly(7years old) and Roxy(8years old). They are my wife and I 4 legged children.

  4. Very informative. My sister-in-law who breeds cocker spaniels knows this it says things like about this epilepsy or something in the breed she's only had one puppy actually that has passed away from it. Where we thought oh my God that really sucks cuz she was such a good lovable dog that we never even saw that in her. And we are huge dog lovers. This is the first time I've ever had a small dog myself I've got the black cocker spaniel my wife has the I think it's called a Fawn color cocker spaniel . They are both males and they have both been fixed just recently. Right now I have one sitting on my lap he is the black one. Affectionate yes these animals are very affectionate so much so they want to crawl into the bed with you and sleep with you all night long some of them snore some of them don't. They are very trusting with that said if they trust you they love you for life but that can be said with many dogs but these guys are really snugglers but when they get too hot they want to go sleep at the end of the bed which is understandable. right now we're trying to train them not to poop and pee in the house which is so much fun for me let me tell you I work as a janitor so cleaning all day long to come home to scrubbing that out does suck but their puppies what do you want. And it's true they do work together but these two happen actually come from one father and two separate mothers so they're basically Brothers. And they were actually born a week apart. but oh my God what people sell these dogs for is just blows my mind away. I'm just under the belief that a dog should have a good home and shouldn't cost you a whole bunch but there's a lot of breeders out there that say no that dog is worth $3,000 or $1,500 or $800.

  5. We had one for 12 years. He never barked. He was an absolutely quiet fellow, almost royal. Never had a temperament, very disciplined, although he was never given any proper training. He had his own routine and liked to follow that routine. But still never fussed too much if we couldn't keep up sometime. He died of a heart failure but is still very much in our hearts.

  6. Take all this info with a grain of salt tbh. All Cockers have distinct personalities that may or may not coincide with the breed standard. My 1st cocker was a basket case and couldn't handle being alone, my next one couldn't have cared less and I raised them both from puppyhood. But I have never seen nor heard from anyone I've known with cockers about the rage syndrome. I know it's a real thing, but it is super rare.

  7. I've lived with cockers most of my life. They are indeed a loving and loyal breed, most of the cockers that I've had have been rescues, there are so many dogs that need homes I'd encourage anyone to go this route.
One thing I'd add to the video is that they simply adore sharing your bed, though, it quickly becomes their bed.

  8. I got my girl last year, she's very good and loving but she gets into all sorts of trash!

  9. My American cocker spaniel is 7 this year and is so adorable, and hardly ever barks. He is so affectionate and friendly and we just love him to bits. This year he has had some major health issues which was pancreatitis and Ulcers in his stomach and we was backwards and forwards to the vets for a number of weeks and at one point we thought we was going to lose him but thankfully with a complete change of diet and medication he is back to his normal lovable , playful self. On top of this at Christmas he managed to devour a whole dark chocolate orange, paper included which was another visit to the vet to get him to throw it back up, £330 later, a very expensive chocolate orange!!!!!!!! but he is worth every penny as such unconditional love , they really do make a house a home

  10. Our rescue Cocker is EXTREMELY protective and is the only dog that I've had who is stubborn!
He doesn't like the rain and flat out refuses to go out in it!

  11. Best dog I ever had. Have one right now, he’s 13. He has been an angle and I really recommend them to any family.

Also, they don’t bark that much Lol. Mine is well behaved and funny and so loving!

  12. I love our cocker Lily! She’s a handful but she’s the sweetest girl. Very outgoing, and obsessed with food. She knows about 20 commands. She’s smart, and she’s sneaky when it comes to food! Nothing can stop the Lily Pup!

  13. Mine started sensing my seizures when he was 3 months old. He alerts and does recovery instinctually. He has been my service dog since he reliably sensed and alerted for 6 months. He will be 2 years old in the beginning of December. He is very well.behaved when we go out. He still gets excited when we go to the store bc people stop us to ask to pet him..since Cockers are so social, the second someone pays attention to him it takes a bit to get him back on task. So he still wears his "in-training" patch…since I am training myself in not in too much hurry. He is amazing..I got him originally as an emotional support dog.. that was before I started having seizures.. he is a very special boy

  14. Americans always adding America to almost anything to make it their own.
    Stop stealing from other countries!

  15. I wish I could post a family photo well the family of four that I have of cocker spaniels. I have one sable mail I have two black one female one male and I have one fawn color cocker spaniel. Three boys one girl the female is still intact but the males have all been neutered only because they're all related. They were born at different times. But with that said they're a great wonderful dog but if you don't have time for them don't bother getting one. If you don't like them sleeping in your bed you don't know what you're missing out on. They love to snuggle with you especially if you snuggle with them from puppy to adulthood once they've made your bed their bed you're never getting them back out of it you might be able to good luck with that but why would you want to they're teddy bear dogs that's how I refer to them Yes they take high maintenance. I'm 50 years old and I can barely keep up with them but they still listen to me and they still love me best darn dog I've ever had in my life. And I've had a lot of dogs which I've loved all of them but these guys are complete characters they will make you laugh and they are great with children mine are anyways cats on the other hand they will torment cats. Mine do anyways and mine chase after they're just like any other dog we'll chase after chickens I live out in rural Idaho and I don't know the form they go for those chickens real fast but they don't do it to kill them as far as I know. But they will chase down a mouse quicker and quick. And any other little vermin. We've got coyotes so I have to bring them in at night if you don't know what a coyote does to a house dog you don't want to know. So if you live if you live out somewhere rural and you're thinking about getting a dog like this make sure they come in at night and keep a fenced yard. They cannot protect themselves against a coyote. If you're looking for something to protect yourself against a coyote I would suggest you get two Akitas. Or maybe three. The American and Akita

  16. If you happen to get the cocker spaniel that howls and you like it it is such a treat. I have one that will howl with me I like to howl it's actually like a like their own song I can get them to do it. But where I get one to do it the all four will do it so you give it's a give and take. But yeah they're they're great wonderful dogs while I'm typing this message I have one he's the sable he's laying with me right now on my lap sleeping they sleep a lot especially when they get lots of exercise or even when they don't get lots of exercise they'll just lay on the bed if you if you're not an active person and you have a cocker spaniel that cocker spaniel will do exactly what you're doing just hang out but every once in a while they do want to get out and run so that would be a good thing for any dog actually
