Irish Wolfhound is a historic sighthound dog breed from Ireland that has by its presence and substantial size inspired literature, poetry, and mythology. Like all sighthounds, it was used to pursue game by speed; it was also famed as a guardian dog, specializing in protection against and for the hunting of wolves.

In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Irish Wolfhound that you might not know.
A Quick Overview:
Group: Hound Dogs
Weight: 115 to 180 pounds
Height: 32 to 35 inches tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 6-8 years
When Irish eyes are smiling, you can be sure they belong to an Irish Wolfhound. He has a noble and commanding appearance, but beneath his shaggy eyebrows twinkle eyes with a sweet, gentle expression. This ancient breed originated in Ireland, where he served as both a war dog and a hunting dog. He came close to extinction in the 19th century after the great prey animals — wolves, deer, and wild boars — had largely disappeared in Ireland, but the breed was revived and today is a wonderful companion who draws the admiration of many.
The Irish Wolfhound is the tallest of all dog breeds and the largest of the sighthounds — dogs that chase moving prey. Despite his distant past as a ferocious war dog, he’s a gentle giant who gets along with everyone, including children, other dogs, and sometimes even cats. He loves long walks, which are important in maintaining his huge body, but otherwise, he’s satisfied to be a couch potato.
While they’re quiet indoors, Irish Wolfhounds are not recommended for apartment living. Consider whether you’d be able to get one up and down the stairs if he were injured or sick. They do best in a home with a large fenced yard where they can have room to run. The Irish Wolfhound is not the ideal watchdog. He doesn’t bark an alarm, and although he has the size to deter many would-be intruders he doesn’t have the nature of a guard dog. He’s brave but not aggressive.
Like any dog, the Irish Wolfhound isn’t the breed for everyone. His gigantic size alone is a consideration. He has several health issues that potential owners must be aware of. And he’s a short-lived breed who has only a 6- to 8-year life span. If you’re looking for a breed that lives many years and is easy to care for, then he’s not the breed for you. But if you’re looking for a companion who will fill your life with love, admiration, and sloppy kisses, then look no further.

I’ve seen a leprechaun riding one before
A bath once or twice a year? Nonsense.
Don’t agree, my soon to be 3 year old Wolfhound is a great watch dog. Don’t know if she would actually do anything but her deep growl and her barking are very intimidating. Also, yes she has a prey drive and will chase animals in the forest but as soon as she realizes I’m not with her she comes running back to find me, usually after less than a minute. Otherwise she is probably the most intelligent and sweet dog I have ever had.
None aggressive! My ex had two of them whenever the bin men or courir came near the house they scared the hell out of the lads. They are friendly but protective of thier family
I have a female that is 14 months old, 33" at tye shoulder and @125lbs. She is very quick and agile, loving, timid around strange adults but loves kids and love to cuddle. She was very destructive when she was younger and left alone, not so much now but has her moments. There are only 4 wolfhounds in my Tri State area, 2 in my city including mine and she's definitely a conversation starter. I'm a very lucky guy to have her, she is the best 💓💓. Thanks for you video
you forgot about the smacking tail whenever they are happy, and gosh it doesn't take much to make them happy.
Look like giant yorkie poo.
They are FRIENDLY!. I lived in the country years ago & there were few people around. I often took walks down the (on pavement). When this dog, at the end of the road, was lonely, I figured because he was super eager to love on you (me). He'd know I was walking his way he'd come running toward me. I never have been afraid of any dog but I had to stand hard on my ground because he'd enthusiastically jump up, put both front legs around my shoulders. The only way I could have been hurt by this beautiful, marvelous canine friend was his great height could knock me down. I've never had the outdoor room for an Irish Wolfhound, but this would be my first pick. SOOOO lovable!
I was working in a very expensive upscale house repairing a baluster on the staircase when a very very large dog ( Irish Wolfhound ) came running down the hallway it stopped in front of me about two feet away and started barking while leaning down toward me( I was kneeling on the floor ) The housekeeper maid came in and said pet him. I said no way am I going to pet him and she responded pet him or he will not leave you alone. So I did proceed to pet him and for the next 2 days I had a brand new friend. But I must add I almost crapped my pants when he first came running at me. All in all it was a good experience
they are so cute
I’m really leaning towards one of these!!! I don’t know if any in my area though so meeting one in RL is going to be tough (I’ve only found like two or three breeders in my state too).
Yo top fact heres a suggestion Irish wolf hound is a reconstructon of the dog cu hint not quite the same read more good job but unfortunately ya miss most important breed facts ty.You tube .health iusses .
3:00 That poor jack Russell is getting its shit beat in by that wolfhound
The modern irish wolfhounds are very weak and are used for fashion. Not like the old times in IRELAND they were bred to kill wolves
If you want irish wolfhound but you want a smaller dog get a bigger standard schnauzer instead. You'll get a dog with similar appearance and character who can be also decent guard dog.
Wolfies are friendly to those friendly to them, but if they encounter someone with "bad intentions" they have the amazing ability to sense it immediately and become some of the most formidable guard dogs youve ever seen.
The Irish Wolfhound- "gentle when stroked, furious when provoked "😉
Owned 3 so far and they are great guard dogs to their family! They protect your car with a bark but they will protect their family with their life. (includes taking on bears)
My girlfriend and I have a miniature dachshund thats just about a year old, but he’s very small and not going to get any bigger. Anyone buy an Irish Wolfhound after they already had a little dog, and if so, what was your experience like?
I have an Irish wolfhound. She is 10 years old.She guards my truck, she guards my house. She is my therapy dog.As soon as I say it’s ok she stops growling.
She is food aggressive.
She make me feel SAFE I’m 67 years old.So when you say there not good watch dogs I have to disagree.
You know, when your walking your hound, there is ALWAYS atleast one comment along the line of “is that a horse?”.
I have a Wolfhound. Expect injuries, not because they are attacking you but that tail is lethal when you were sitting down and it’s wagging. Also stepped on toes. The video is correct about not barking. Someone can walk into my house and not even know I have a dog until he comes around the corner. Expect a 2+ year wait list for a reputable breeder.
First fact, from Ireland, the wolf hound went extinct and what your buying today is a dog made from 3 different breeds including Dalmatian. Sad but true. To see what the reall wolf killer of 16 to 17th century looked like take a look at contemporary paintings, you may be surprised by what you see.
I found one of these dogs on the side of the road, it was very cold and the rain was coming in. I pulled over and went right up to him he just stood there and didn’t shy away one bit. I put him in the back of my car, we went to the spca to scan for a microchip but he didn’t have one, I filled out a found report with the local humane center and posted an ad of Craigslist. The shelter said they were at max capacity so I took him home, not knowing how he would be around my dog or cat. He has been such a good boy, I even found his mom she responded to my ad she said he has gotten out many times before and has been able to come back, I told her he was such a good dog I was just going to keep him. She asked me if I wanted him because she cannot spend time with him. So now he’s mine. I have one short basset hound and one tall Irish wolf hound. He is blonde. I looked up tall scruffy dog breeds and he looks identical to these. Very mellow at home but playful at the park, he is great with my animals. He is not neutered.

Weak? Not so. My first wolfhound saved my life against 5 Sarplaninacs, chasing them away after he overcame them with paws and body tackles. He was 92 cm tall and weighed 85 kg. My present wolfhound is 100 cm tall at the withers and weighs 95 kg
Nice!
Completely disagree with the comment- they can’t live in apartments. We live in a condo. Our wolfhound is more than happy and she has 3 hour walks a day. She’s the kindest and loving dog to our mini schnauzer ( who’s the boss) and our cockapoo who is more hippie than dog.
Fas en rubio era?
fact #11:they are awesome
I have a Irish Wolfhound he is very energetic he love me and he is 76 in dog years (yes it’s true)
I have an Irish wolf hound and mine is friendly but very protective I was dogsitting my cousins cavoodle and they barked at each other a lot so he is very protective
The apartment living thing is such a myth in the dog world, your dog, doesnt matter what breed, can live in an apartment, provided they get the right amount of excercise a day and if large breeds, given the space they desire.
If you're considering this wonderful breed – expect injuries from the 2.5' gigantic, heavy, tail that'll knock everything over when it wags and constantly whip you in the nuts or face, the happy prancing (don't go barefoot) and coming in quick for cuddles – smaller people will be picked off like bowling pins..I've been knocked clear off my feet many times. She does bark when someone is hovering outside the house instead of knocking and her entire body language is alert when it's appropriate. Incredibly tough physically, never ignore any pain from this breed. She gets the zoomies exactly like a cute, little butt tucking Frenchie does and clumsily miscalculates how near she is to other objects, animals and humans -she always comes out the victor. Her head is higher than the counters and pizza is her favorite thing to snatch and grab and at these times she's suddenly incredibly agile. Chewing through the thickest bones and wood is not a task, it's a snack-so was the coffee table. The tiny cat still rules the house though 😂
My female Irish Wolfhound wasn't easy to train, but she's the sweetest dog I've ever seen. The only problem is with the couch. If someone lies on it, she shows no mercy; she'll sit on the person's head without any consideration. 😂 She has a tail to the ground and when she is happy, there are quickly bruises 😅😅
By the way, her grandma got 11 years
Our wolfhound, Finn, is wonderful. Very lovable and curious. He loves to run, and its so fun to watch him do so. Cannot imagine living life without him.
Iv got a bandogg with 25% irish wolf hound. I love watching these vids on irishwolf hounds. He have that same cheecky personality i see in all irishwolfhounds. He looks like a bandogg but has irishwolfhound hair around neck and top of back.
He smart as hell, stubborn as hell, though from the mastiff and pit bull in him he is non stop , he is actually dangerous lol.
Velcro dogs. We love ours immensely and a more loving and affectionate dog there's not.
i have had 4 Irish Wolfhound cross dogs, amazing dogs each with such interesting mix of traits from the crosses.
great dane cross – calm, would not walk out of open gate – loved by every human friend – non hunter
greyhound cross (two) super fast but non hunter.
current (stag x deer x irish) was chasing kangaroos off our 5 acres at 6 months old, catches and kills rabbits and birds – she loves to go walkabout if the not chained when we open the front gate – i chased her for 5km once before i said sod it and headed home -1/2 way back she trotted past wagging her tail as if to say i'm having lots of fun mum.
steals socks and oven gloves and prances around until you notice and chase her around the house.
stole my socks twice just this morning.
EDIT: when out in the car anyone could walk up and pat them – they are NOT guard dogs for property or people – although i suspect that if someone were stupid enough to try to harm me god help them.
