The Australian Cattle Dog may not be the preeminent agility dog but the breed does excel at the sport. Cara Callaway is a Cattle Dog and Agility sport enthusiast. She’s owned the breed since 1994.
The Australian Cattle Dog (ACD), or simply Cattle Dog, is a breed of herding dog originally developed in Australia for droving cattle over long distances across rough terrain. This breed is a medium-sized, short-coated dog that occurs in two main colour forms. It has either brown or black hair distributed fairly evenly through a white coat, which gives the appearance of a “red” or “blue” dog. It should not be confused with the Australian Shepherd, a similarly named but totally different breed.
As with dogs from other working breeds, the Australian Cattle Dog is energetic and intelligent with an independent streak. It responds well to structured training, particularly if it is interesting and challenging. It was originally bred to herd by biting, and is known to nip running children. It forms a strong attachment to its owners, and can be protective of them and their possessions. It is easy to groom and maintain, requiring little more than brushing during the shedding period. The most common health problems are deafness and progressive blindness (both hereditary conditions) and accidental injury; otherwise, it is a robust breed with a lifespan of 12 to 14 years.

I have a 3/4 blue heeler and 1/4 Australian cattle dog. She’s my first dog. I got her at 6 weeks old. She’s amazing. I take her on long walks and to the beach. Plus I started doing dog agility with her to work her mind. She loves it. She’s so smart and just loves having a job.
My cattle dog is what I call too friendly 😂 she loves everyone and everything and is so happy! She will growl if she sees someone that is sketchy so I know she can tell the difference
i have a blue heeler who's 2 years old are they good for catching mice?
I walk my Blue Heeler twice a day for a hour each
i play fetch with her she's a watch dog
HEELERS ROCK!
Thank you. So informative.
I heard the Dalmatian wasn’t a thing..
Best dog I ever owned … only limited by our imaginations … get them around people when they are young as much as possible or they can be stranger leery. Definitely not for couch potatoes you will need to run and work your dog at least an hour a day or you could be in trouble. Very loyal and rewarding dog to own for the right owner.
What an awesome documentary! Thankful for Cara's insight and honesty 🙂
Do you sell puppies
I have a Stumpy Tail Heeler. It's natural. The litter he came from, was 6 stumpy tail and 3 long tail. Know your facts
Chopping off a dog's tail is barbaric; cruel. A dog uses it's tail for balance and also like a rudder to help them turn.
Pure ignorance, there should be a law against it.
Love cattle dogs!!!!
You guys need to verify whats being said by these people in the videos. This lady is literally just telling myths of the ACD. They were NOT bred with Dalmatians that is just a myth. There is no verifiable evidence that these dogs were ever bred with dalmations. Secondly, there is literally a breed called the stumpy tail cattle that is born without a tail. Nobody is docking ACD tails. This lady is talking out her 🫏 and i had to stop the video before even finishing it
Kripto is striking looking dog. I wonder what he looks like after being older? thank you.
and when they get tired out they make the BEST cuddlers
there is no DALMATION IN THE BREED ,please read the book THE DOGS THAT MADE AUSTRALIA by Guy HALL
No, I’m a real fan of the ACD, they are really smart, but for agility, the other Australian breed of sheep dog is far better and a good one beats a Border Collie.
love this woman, love this video, love ACDs, awesome
Hey @dogumentarytv where is your most based dogs list? Is it taken down? I want to watch it.
I love my cattle dogs they are the best
Best dog ever. I have. 4 year old Aussie Heeler, her mom was a red Merle Australian Shepherd, her dad a Blue Heeler. We are about to began agility training and CANT WAIT
Thank you.I learned a lot and already knew some of it.Because of my puppy no.She is a complicated mix but her dominant side is the australian cattle dog and so i'm very happy with her.
As a Australian and Blue Heeler owner I don't understand why Americans call them Australian Cattle Dogs ,as we have many different types of dogs for cattle. We call them by the breed ( eg. your dog is a Blue Heeler). A cattle dog could be a variety of many breeds such as a The Blue Heeler ,Red Heeler ,Kelpie and Border Collie all fit this broard name. So as I said as a Australian its a bit weird to call a Blue Heeler such a loose termed name as ACD. Here its just a Blue Heeler.
And the docking of the tails is something else that upsets me. Why would you do that to your best mate. The tail helps read the mood of the dog and also comes in handy for flies in the outback of Australia. Essentially your removing one of their receptors.
The Australian standard describes them as bred to drive cattle, they do not herd
They were bred from bobtails, blue merle collies, dalmations and no dingo
They were mainly used for guard drays and heel the bullocks
That red dog is not an acd it's a cross and the pup is ordinary and should not be bred from as he is a terrible type
I love it when an American makes a mess of our wonderful breed and talks rubbish
They are not used much in Australia on stock as they are not herders and the Kelpie is favoured
As a lifelong pit bull dog owner, I've always been impressed with how herding dogs can stay on task. Fantastic animals if you're into working with them.
Eager to please but stubborn 😂cuz there’re so damn smart!! @ashj1390- the pet grooming kit and vaccum by Onelsall has been a game changer for our sheddy “cat” dog baby 🤣!
I like that this Dog was Bred for Funtion and not looks.
🤔🤔
"They don't bark a lot." Mine never shuts up 😂
9:55 "They shed/blow their coats once per year" yeah, from January to December lol!
I've got a heeler/American Eskimo dog (plus who-knows-what) who HATES the heat … tough in Texas summers. But such a love & so eager to please. He also hates water but has learned to swim in my parents' pool. He'll be 8 in a couple of weeks.
