Appearance: The Basenji is a small dog known for its athletic build and unique, tightly curled tail. They have a smooth, short coat that comes in colors like chestnut red, black, tricolor, or brindle, often with white markings. Basenjis stand around 16-17 inches tall and weigh between 22-24 pounds.They have a lifespan of 13-14 years.

Temperament: Known as the “barkless dog,” the Basenji is quiet but can be quite vocal with yodel-like sounds. They are independent, curious, and can be somewhat aloof with strangers. Loyal to their families, Basenjis have a cat-like demeanor and are known for grooming themselves.

Exercise Needs: They are active and energetic, requiring daily exercise and mental stimulation. They enjoy walks, playtime, and activities that allow them to use their hunting instincts, like puzzle toys and agility training.

Health: Generally a healthy breed, they can be prone to some genetic health issues like Fanconi syndrome, hip dysplasia, and eye conditions. Routine vet visits and a balanced diet help keep them in top health.

History: Originating from Central Africa, Basenjis were used for hunting and as companions for African tribes. They are one of the oldest dog breeds, with a lineage that dates back thousands of years.

Grooming: They have a short, low-maintenance coat that requires minimal grooming. They shed lightly and only need occasional brushing. Being naturally clean, they rarely need baths.
