If you want to transition from on leash to off leash you need a very light line. The lighter the leash and the looser you can keep it the more the dog relies on your commands or body language and the less it relies on the leash. The key to someday being able to do off leash obedience is to always keep a loose leash, keep training sessions short and quit on a positive note. My toy australian Shepherd (mini american shepherd) Matt demonstrates. He has been trained totally with pressure and release using no treats.
