In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Shetland Sheepdog that you might not know.

A Quick Overview:
Group: Herding Dogs
Weight: Starts at 20 pounds
Height: 13 to 16 inches tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 12 – 15 years

Shelties are loving companions for all members of the family, including the kids, but they can be reserved or even shy around strangers. Because of their protective nature, they’re quick to bark if they sense that anything’s amiss in their territory. Training is essential to keep this trait from becoming a nuisance. On the upside, they make excellent watchdogs. You just have to teach them some discrimination.

Because of their intelligence, willingness to please, and athletic ability, Shelties excel at performance events. In their size group, Shelties typically dominate the field in agility. They’re also exceptionally good in competitive obedience, flyball, tracking, and herding. In fact, Shelties have a reputation for being a little too smart for their own good. This is a breed that needs a job. Without plenty of mental stimulation, Shelties quickly become bored and will invent their own entertainment, which may or may not be to their people’s liking.

Shelties retain a strong herding instinct. You’ll find that your Sheltie will enthusiastically chase and try to “herd” squirrels, rabbits, and children, running around them, barking and nipping. Shelty owners should discourage this habit, especially with children, because it can lead to biting. Never let your Sheltie herd unless it’s in a herding class with appropriate subjects such as ducks or sheep.

  1. They can also hold grudges. My old Shetland used to nip my aunt ankle every time she was visiting. Which was not very often.

  2. Wonderful dogs
..mine was not a barker as indicated
He was super sweet sensitive and very intelligent and always always cheerful

  3. Don't say don't buy from a breeder it's not the dogs fault !It should just be love to all dogs! They all deserve it!

  4. I have one of those fat things, my Sheltie eats a lot and bites a lot! he’s so greedy he will eat anything he can find/ reach

  5. My sheltie (Kimmy) was the best dog we ever had. So sweet and so smart. Had her for 12 years. I now call shelties “Kimmy dogs”

  6. I have a Sheltie, I was told it was a mini- collie when I brought her. She’s the best dog ever and a great surprise

  7. I lost my sheltie in 2017 to cancer granted the old boy lived to be in his golden years and man if he wasn't the best dog a person could have. I've finally worked myself up to get another one , best breed out there in my opinion

  8. Can shelties use pee pad forever or are they too big ?

  9. I was not a dog person prior to getting my sheltie. I wanted a cat, but I'm terribly allergic. So I compromised by getting a sheltie. Lemme tell you: he is such a blessing to me. He kind of reminds me of a cat honestly…. but he is so sweet, sensitive, smart, gentle, and surprisingly superrrrrr quiet (I got lucky). I can imagine sticking with this breed forever.

  10. Don't let barking be exaggerated. Shelties do not bark that much unless they are being mistreated. Furthermore Shelties have baby voices. Grooming is not a big issue. But is is a pleasant task because it is time you can spend with the Sheltie

  11. We had one for over ten years. Working size. Wonderful personality. Very energetic.

She also didn't have the stripe on the nose.

  12. Yes they bark..but are really good with kids ( discounting the fact that she nipped @kids heels running around the backyard) she was a great dog for my kids to grow up with..sometimes funny..loved to go on a sled in the snow..we also got a collie..we never had a break-in. Too bad Sheltie got cancer @ 11 yrs old.

  13. fun fact they're in the top 5 rarest dogs in Shetland and they're are none ever used in
Shetland for herding and sheepdogging, when see they are always heeling to they're.owner and are quite protective as it's in they're nature

  14. My Granny had a sheltie called Bonnie who was completely strawberry blonde in colour. She was just the best dog.

  15. Awesome video! One thing to add, Shelties can be big too! Although it’s uncommon, Shelties can grow up to 50lbs! My girl is 40 lbs but she’s not fat, she’s just taller and bigger. Most people confuse her for a Collie.

  16. I have a sheltie, she's seems to understand when I talk to her, or tilts her head to show that she doesn't understand advanced math, well neither do I, maybe that's on me.

  17. I just got myself a 2 month old, and after the 2 days of training. He's already learned how to sit

  18. I have ownned nine Shelties over the last twenty five years and couldn't ask for a better bunch of kids! Absolutely everything you said is very true and furthermore, they are a very sensitive dog and require a soft voice and a gentle touch! One more thing, they are so smart we started spelling words around them so they wouldn't get too excited before a walk or playing ball well, it didn't take long before they caught on to exactly what we were spelling! I've been outsmarted by more Shelties than I care to admit to. We won't talk about when three Shelties blow their coat at the same time! 😖

  19. Oh,yes I have lived with these bred of dogs.Over the last nineteen years my wife and I have had three that have gone to,Rainbow Bridge, two lived a long life, the third one life was cut short from an enlarged heart at six years.Presently we have two,one will be three and the other will be two.Everyone of them had their own personal personallity.Ww loved every one of them

  20. how many hours of the day you can leave an adult sheltie? Thanks!

  21. My sheltie was almost human…so smart! My daughter was in her crib upstairs. I went downstairs to get water. The vaporizer was on. Suddenly she started barking and running up and down the stairs. Yea like lassie lol. I followed her to the bedroom…sparks were coming from the wall where the vaporizer was plugged in. Iimagine…she actually saved my daughters life!! I loved her so much and think of her still after many years. I hope she's in heaven. If the lion will lay down with the lamb surely she's with God. I hope she is happy and knows I still love her

  22. If you decide to get a Sheltie then get ready for a ride. The entertainment is "first class"! I can't imagine life without one.
