{"id":2809447,"date":"2026-04-08T17:39:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-08T17:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wacoca.com\/news\/2809447\/"},"modified":"2026-04-08T17:39:00","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T17:39:00","slug":"netherlands-players-to-follow-norway-germany-in-qatar-protest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wacoca.com\/news\/2809447\/","title":{"rendered":"Netherlands players to follow Norway, Germany in Qatar protest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AMSTERDAM (Reuters) &#8211; The Netherlands soccer team will protest against Qatar\u2019s hosting of the 2022 World Cup ahead of their qualifier against Latvia in Amsterdam on Saturday, defender Matthijs de Ligt said on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Juventus player would give no further details on the planned protest, he told a pre-match news conference.<\/p>\n<p>The Dutch protest will follow action taken by the players of Norway and Germany who wore shirts before their World Cup qualifiers this week voicing concern over the conditions for migrant workers in the Gulf country.<\/p>\n<p>It will also come in front of 5,000 spectators who are being allowed into Saturday\u2019s game at the Amsterdam Arena.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I can give a scoop,&#8221; De Ligt said, referring to the planned protest. \u201cYou will see what it is tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Germany lined up before kickoff in their opening qualifier against Iceland at Duisburg wearing shirts displaying the message &#8220;HUMAN RIGHTS&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Norway staged a similar protest on Wednesday before their match in Gibraltar when their players wore t-shirts with the message: &#8220;Human rights, on and off the pitch&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wacoca.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/https:\/\/archive-images.prod.global.a201836.reutersmedia.net\/2021\/03\/26\/LYNXMPEH2P19N.JPG\" height=\"2624\" alt=\"FILE PHOTO: Euro 2020 Qualifier - Group C - Northern Ireland v Netherlands\"\/><\/p>\n<p>FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football &#8211; Euro 2020 Qualifier &#8211; Group C &#8211; Northern Ireland v Netherlands &#8211; Windsor Park, Belfast, Northern Ireland, Britain &#8211; November 16, 2019  Netherlands&#8217; Matthijs de&#8230; \u3082\u3063\u3068\u8aad\u3080<\/p>\n<p>De Ligt said the Netherlands players had also made a decision to display their concern. \u201cWe have talked about it for a long time, it is a sensitive subject but I think it is clear what our opinion is,&#8221; added the centre back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone has read about the situation (with workers) in Qatar, of course, but we\u2019ve started talking and discussing it since the heightened media reports.
