    何度観ても涙が出て切なくてドキドキして温かい。こんな映画のような完璧なドラマは久しくない。

    this series is just so beautifully written that i still have difficulty expressing and processing all my thoughts and emotions.

    for me, music takes me back to certain times in our lives and certain memories of that period of time and this series is beautifully bookmarked between 2 songs of Utada Hikaru about first love, "First Love" in 1999 as a 15 year old teenager and "Hatsukoi" (meaning First Love translated from Japanese) in 2018 when she's a 35 year old lady.

    spoilers ahead

    the "First Love" of 1999 was about the innocent, fun, pure and unburdened enthusiasm of first love. Utada sang it as a teenager and we can hear it in the rawness and power of her voice. so many things that we would do as teenagers just to get to know our crush or just to be with them, yet too awkward to openly express it. just like Harumichi cramping for the exam, waiting for her in the snow, the awkwardness of not knowing "what is your favourite food" is.

    but nothing hits harder than Life, and their first love was torn apart by situation beyond their control. We see them in their life situation as they became adult, where inadvertently life happens and things like broken relationships, work, money, health issues makes us more faded and jaded. really felt it when Yae said she learnt to live with her loneliness and whatever she has and just try to be contented. how many of us are stuck in the same situation? telling ourselves that we are blessed with whatever we have now, we should be satisfied and content while deep down there is a sense of longing and emptiness?

    20 years later, Utada Hikaru released "Hatsukoi" in 2018, her singing technique is different from her teenage years, much more polished and technical and still able to convey the pain and longing of first love. as fate would have it, 20 years later, Yae and Harumichi were able to re-experience this first love again even though both of them have changed. this is not their first love, and yet it is their first love in a sense, 20 years later, just like the song.

    to me the series being inspired by these two songs, with the story-writing give it such a circular and complete storyline. you also see Yae and Harumichi advising Tsukuru, with their experience of heartache and life, it feels like they are talking to the younger version of themselves if they could go back in time. the superb cinematography and the acting skills of Hikari Mitsushima really touched me deeply. it's a good show where days after watching it, i'm still recalling bits and pieces of it, feeling some of the mood of certain scenes and listening to the songs and watching clips of it over the internet.

    there are so many touching moments…
    when Harumichi saw Yae again as an adult and in the midst of the shock and happiness, a single tear rolled down his eye
    when Yae had to give up custody of Tsukuru while wiping her tears and signing the custody papers, despite that her tears fall down and smudged the signature on the custody paper
    Yae eating by herself, tearing away alone in the restaurant when she confesses her love to Harumichi but he had to leave
    when Yae, while listening to First Love on the discman, remembers Harumichi and her lost memories and with the shock realization, tears streamed down her eyes uncontrollably

    and so much more, really have to rewatch it a few more times to appreciate the acting and the layers within the storyline again. it really is my top series of 2022 easily.
