The Suez Canal was an indispensable step in the region’s development. For hundreds of years the Sinai Peninsula has served as an exchange route for commerce and culture between the peoples of Asia and Africa. The excavation of the 167- kilometer-long canal in 1859 established a water barrier between the peninsula and the rest of Egypt and the need for connections between the two landmasses emerged in 1869 when the canal was finally inaugurated.
El Ferdan bridge:
The world’s largest swing bridge can be found crossing the Suez Canal at El-Ferdan, 14 km north of Ismalia. It is the fifth bridge to be constructed on the same site since 1920 and will restore the former railway link between Cairo and Sinai, making it a major project for the development of the peninsula. The 60-meter-long swing bridge will enable existing railway infrastructure linking Cairo and the Mediterranean Sea west of the canal to be restored and extended into Sinai. The line will link with new railway connections in northeast Egypt, extending it to El-Arish and Rafah at the Palestinian border and then heading southwest to Sharm El-Sheikh.
