Lots of tech media outlets are reporting that M1 Mac owners are experiencing abnormally high data writes, which will result in early failure of the SSD. We don’t have the issue on our M1 Macs, so how widespread is it? Do M1 owners need to worry?

  1. It would have been better if Apple could have provided RAM upgradable slots and make the SSD replaceable port (instead of soldiering a drive to a motherboard (that is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen)

  2. Apple sees their product same as an iPad or iPhone. Don't see many people complaining about their failed ssd on those.
Most people will use external hdds to save anyway. Apple memory is too expensive. Ps. I've never had a failed hard drive from Apple vs my PC and laptops. Just pointing that out.

  3. Glad I’ve decided to stick with my iPad Pro instead of my M1 MacBook Air now that I’ve used both. Using my M1 for mostly just web browsing, it should be fine.

  4. If the arm mac lineup offers slotted/replaceable ram and ssd, I will buy them no doubt.

For some people who believed that ARM chips really require different ram type and different storage type… It's a myth. As an example, a low-end chromebook has a phone-like lpddr4, and phone-like eMMc storage, and it has an x86 processor. And vice versa, an ARM server exists with full size ddr4 ECC slots on its side. And surely Tons of SSDs connected through a full-size PCIe.

  5. I just purchased my M1 mcbook air 3 months ago.and i managed to edit a video 4k with 150clips of video it was perfectly fine.

  6. damn man, this was soo good. i was looking for an iPad pro to replace my macbook, i will still keep both for the time just in case it doesnt hold up for my needs, but im not about to start editing 4k video soo i think ill be okay ..

  7. Are you serious? The reason why a 1000$ premium laptop is a disposable product with a lifespans of 2-3 years is because you're "using it wrong." The fact this is a defense of a top of the line product marketed toward creators and intended to have many use cases is laughable. Even the 16gb version has this problem (even though less pronounced) and the fact the ssd is soldered on and the laptop is bricked if the ssd fails is completely unacceptable on a 1000$ "high-end" device.

  8. Unfortunately (unlike Linux) MacOS doesn't have an option to adjust 'swappiness' ? That's a surprise… Hmmm I think the soldered storage is the only reason I don't have M1 device yet. I have 2011 MBP and the only thing I changed about it was – swapped HDD for SSD. The rest of the components are still up to the task of being a laptop. Can we be sure that M1 laptops won't turn into e-waste in 10 years?

  9. who here use their mac m1 for video and photo editing (lightroom, photoshop, premiere pro, after effects). can u disclose the percentage of lifespan and how long have u been using it?

im tryna buy the air with 512gb id use it mainly for vid and photo edit but due to the issue im afraid it would only last for 2-3 yrs with my intensive usage

  10. My friend bought an M1 Air on my advise even though she hates Apple products to her core. Her system is writing an alarming 40-50GB per day and she barely uses it for more than a few hours in the evenings for streaming content and light browsing. You should know that SSDs fail for all sorts of reason. Apple is not doing anything wrt SSDs. And when a few eventually will fail you cannot replace the SSD which is a major headache. One doesn't want to give their personal data on the SSD to Apple authorised repair and risk the personal data being stolen like it has happened before.

  11. What I liked about the M1 mac mini was it brought the used intel 2018 down to an affordable price, I bought one with 32g of memory for 33% of these.

  12. its only uses swap when your out of real ram and or also when you run bug Sur big Sur is going after swap even if you have ram left over where as Monterey does not do this and there for the only time you'll see swap when running Monterey is when your out of real ram,.

  13. I bought Macbook Air 2020 i5. M1 is a new thing and I let others test it before I buy some mac with M processor. O:-)
