岸田首相　エマニュエル駐日大使と被爆地訪問PM Kishida and US Ambassador Emanuel visit the atomic-bombed city of Hiroshima

岸田総理大臣は3月26日地元・広島を訪れ、アメリカのラーム・エマニュエル駐日大使を迎えて原爆資料館を見学し、原爆慰霊碑に花を手向けました。

3月26日午後、広島市の平和公園に到着したエマニュエル駐日大使と岸田総理。広島県の湯崎知事や広島市の松井市長の出迎えを受け、さっそく約４０分にわたり原爆資料館を見学しました。

かねて広島訪問を望んでいたエマニュエル大使は、オバマ元大統領の首席補佐官を務め、「核兵器のない世界」の理念をバイデン大統領とともに受け継ぐ、アメリカの政権中枢メンバーの１人です。

オバマ氏が折った折り鶴を視察したあと芳名録に記帳しました。

「広島の教訓は戦争のない平和な世界への道標となる　我々の北極星でなければなりません。」

その後、雨が降る中、岸田総理とともに原爆慰霊碑に献花し、深く一礼しました。

非公開で行われた岸田総理とエマニュエル大使の対談では、核軍縮の現状や進め方、ウクライナ情勢について、意見を交わしたということです。

この後岸田総理は自身が外務大臣時代の２０１３年に委嘱制度をつくった、外務省ユース非核特使の経験者たちと面会しました

「今、この厳しい状況だからこそ、対話も含めた平和的な取り組みをより一層強化していくべきだなと」

「みなさんまだまだ若いわけですから、それぞれの思いを、それぞれの立場で、いろいろと実践してもらえれば。」

一方、エマニュエル大使は松井市長の案内を受けながら平和公園を散策し、原爆ドームなどを視察しました。

「大統領の友人として伝えるなら、大統領は、広島・長崎どちらかの都市には行きたいと言うと思います。
資料館で見た子供たちの目、私たちを見る目が忘れられない。」

総理大臣になって初めての平和公園訪問を終え、岸田総理はあらためて核兵器廃絶への決意を語りました。

「被爆の実相に触れてもらう。このことは国際社会に対して、強いメッセージになると期待しています。広島出身の総理としても、世界に向けて、しっかりと発信をしていかなければならないと思います。」

PM Kishida and US Ambassador Emanuel visit the atomic-bombed city of Hiroshima

On March 26, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida visited his hometown, Hiroshima.
He welcomed US Ambassador to Japan, Mr. Rahm Emanuel, and visited the Peace Memorial Museum,as well as offered flowers at the Cenotaph for the Victims of the Atomic Bomb.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and US Ambassador to Japan, Mr. Rahm Emanuel, arrived at Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima on the afternoon of March 26.
They were welcomed by Hiroshima Prefectural Governor Hidehiko Yuzaki and Hiroshima City Mayor Kazumi Matsui and spent approximately 40 minutes touring the Peace Memorial Museum.

Ambassador Emanuel, who has long wanted to visit Hiroshima, served as chief of staff to former President Obama.
Along with President Biden, he continues to carry the philosophy of a world without nuclear weapons
and is a central figure in US politics.
After visiting the display of paper cranes folded by former President Obama, Ambassador Emanuel wrote the following in the museum’s guestbook:

“The lessons of Hiroshima must be our north star guiding us to a world free of war and open to peace.”

After his visit to the museum, he joined PM Kishida in the rain to offer flowers at the Cenotaph for the Victims of the Atomic Bomb.
During a closed meeting between PM Kishida and Ambassador Emanuel,they discussed the current state of nuclear disarmament and progress being made, as well as the invasion of Ukraine.

Following this meeting, PM Kishida met with former Youth Communicators for a World Without Nuclear Weapons, a program launched by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2013, when he served as its Minister.

Guided by Mayor Matsui, Ambassador Emanuel took a walk around Peace Memorial Park and visited the Atomic Bomb Dome and other sites.

I don’t want to speak for the President, but I think as a friend I could say that if he makes it here, to Japan,
I know he’ll want to visit one of the two (atomic-bombed) cities.
(I will not forget) the reverberations of those images, both the adults, but specifically, the children, looking at you.

After his first visit to Peace Memorial Park since becoming prime minister, PM Kishida spoke of his resolve for the abolition of nuclear weapons.
