“Ore no Kanojo”—or “My Girlfriend” in English—is one of my favorite tracks from the Utada Hikaru album Fantôme. The lyrics tell the story of a relationship from the perspective of both the male and female, with Utada singing both parts. To sum up the male part, the guy is kind of a douche, but he at least acknowledges he’s a loser.
I loved the concept so much that I decided to make an English cover! My version, entitled “My Lady,” is a sort-of “follow-up” to Utada’s version, in which we get to dig deeper into the male’s perspective. Spoiler alert: there’s some toxic masculinity going on.
