Directed by French filmmaker Cris Ubermann and written and produced by Japanese artist Yukita Kusunoki, “Journey to Mt. Fuji” is a thoroughly original and entertaining narrative art feature appealing to both family and adult audiences.
With the cultural and social sensibilities of France and Japan combined and conveyed in the very American genre of sci-fi adventure movies, the film tells an engaging story about self-identify, family, and childhood through its daringly bold and innovative blending of poetic imageries, beautiful music, and strong performances from actors.
With the Fukushima nuclear power plant tragedy starting in the middle of principal photography, which affected many aspects of the production and led to script rewrites, the film also acts as a commentary on the timely and timeless questions about the symbiotic relationships between humans and the environment.
