After leading the tournament by 5 shots, Matsuyama hit his second shot in the water on the par 5 15th hole. Matsuyama made bogey, while Schauffele birdied the hole to come within two shots of the lead. Then, on the 16th hole Matsuyama made a second straight bogey, but saw Xander Schauffele hit his tee shot into the water, and went on to make a triple bogey. This cleared the way for Hideki Matsuyama to win his first Major Championship. His first green jacket.
