[ワシントン ２日 ロイター] – ヘグセス米国防長官は２日、ジョージ陸軍参謀総長を解任した。複数の国防当局者と関係筋がロイターに明らかにした。戦時中に大将を解任するのは極めて異例だ。
ヘグセス氏はトランプ大統領の国家安全保障政策を推進するため、司令官の更迭を進めるなど、組織を急ピッチで再編している。
国防総省は、任期を１年以上残していたジョージ氏について「即日付で第４１代陸軍参謀総長を退任する」と認めた。同省は声明で、ジョージ氏の数十年にわたる軍歴に謝意を表し「退役後の幸運を祈る」と述べた。
解任の理由は明らかにされていない。米国が対イラン作戦を展開し、中東での軍備増強を進める中での退任となった。
複数の当局者によると、ヘグセス氏はジョージ氏の他にも、陸軍幹部２人を解任した。
中東での攻撃は主に海軍と空軍が担っているが、防空システム運用のため、陸軍兵士も派遣されている。また、イランでの地上作戦の可能性に備え、精鋭の第８２空挺師団から数千人の兵士が中東に到着し始めている。
ヘグセス氏とジョージ氏の間で公に不和が表面化したことはなかった。
当局者によると、ヘグセス氏の軍事補佐官を務めたラニーブ陸軍副参謀総長が参謀総長代理を務める。
