[シドニー ９日 ロイター] – オーストラリア全土で９日、数千人が集まり、イスラエル
のヘルツォグ大統領
の来訪に抗議した。同大統領は昨年１２月にボンダイビーチで発生した銃乱射事件
を受け、オーストラリアのユダヤ人コミュニティーへの連帯を表明するため複数の都市を訪れている。
事件はユダヤ教の祭り「ハヌカ」が催されている最中に発生し、１５人が死亡した。
アルバニージー豪首相の招待を受けて
オーストラリアを訪問しているヘルツォグ氏は、ボンダイビーチで
犠牲者を追悼する記念碑に花輪を捧げ、生存者や銃撃で亡くなった１５人の遺族とも面会。「全てのオーストラリア人に対する攻撃でもあった。彼らはわれわれの民主主義が大切にする価値観、すなわち、人命の尊厳、宗教の自由、寛容、尊厳、そして敬意を攻撃した」と述べた。
一方、この訪問はヘルツォグ氏がパレスチナ自治区ガザ
での民間人の死に加担していると非難するオーストラリアの一部の人々の怒りを招いている。
パレスチナ支持団体は９日午後、全国の都市や町で抗議活動を組織。シドニーでは何千人もの人々がビジネス地区にある広場に集まり、演説に耳を傾け、パレスチナ支持のスローガンを叫んだ。
