In October 2025, a group of farmers from Sindh, Pakistan, sent pre action letters to energy company RWE and cement producer Heidelberg Materials seeking compensation for the damages caused by the 2022 floods. The farmers argue the companies’ greenhouse gas emissions contributed to climate change which, in turn, exacerbated the likelihood and intensity of the floods.
On 22 December 2025, 39 farmers filed a lawsuit before the Regional Court of Heidelberg (Germany), under German civil law and building on the Lliuya v. RWE precedent.
In a statement, RWE said it regarded the claim as “unfounded”, since it has always operated “in accordance with applicable law”, and deemed the lawsuit an “attempt to shift climate policy demands to German courtrooms”. To the company, “civil liability of German companies for global climate damage is massively damaging to Germany as an industrial location and removes legal certainty…”
