現地時間午前１時３０分（日本時間午前９時３０分）に爆発に続き火災が発生。爆発の原因は不明だが、当局は事故とみている。

検察は会見で、「現時点では火災と考えており、攻撃の可能性は考えていない」と述べた。
バレー州の治安責任者は、犠牲者には外国人が含まれると述べた。同州の警察幹部によると、負傷者の大半は重傷という。
イタリアのタヤーニ外相は、国内テレビに対し、「新年の祝いの最中に投げられた爆竹が爆発し、火災が発生したようだ」と語った。
