政府閉鎖は１９８１年以降で１５回目。政府機関は９月雇用統計の発表が停止され、航空便が遅延するほか、連邦政府職員７５万人が一時帰休となり、１日当たり４億ドルの損失が生じると警告している。
連邦政府職員の削減を進めてきたトランプ大統領は３０日、民主党に対し、政府閉鎖によってさらなる職員削減やプログラムの停止など「不可逆的な」措置に道が開かれる可能性があると警告した。

専門家は今回の政府閉鎖について、過去の事例よりも長期化する可能性があると指摘する。
米国史上最長の政府閉鎖は、第１次トランプ政権下の２０１８年１２月から１９年１月にかけての３５日間で、この際は国境警備を巡り対立した。
シカゴ大学のロバート・ペイプ政治学教授は、保守系活動家チャーリー・カーク氏射殺を受けた政治の二極化や与野党双方の強硬派の勢力拡大により、政府機関再開に向けた指導部の合意がより困難になる可能性があると指摘。
「政治のルールは根本的に変化しており、どこに行き着くのかはっきりとは分からない」と述べた。
