“Indigenous oppose oil drilling and gold mining in the Amazon”, 09 August 2025

…Indigenous from Peru and Ecuador have expressed their opposition to a proposal to export Ecuadorian oil via the Northern Peru pipeline…

In her Independence Day message, President Dina Boluarte announced that the state-owned companies Petroecuador and Petroperú had agreed that the former will export the crude oil extracted from its southern oil fields via the Pacific coast employing the Northern Peruvian Oil Pipeline.

In response the Achuar, Wampis and Chapra indigenous nations in Peru’s northern Amazon denounced the decision as a direct threat to their rights, territories and livelihoods, and because the decision had been made without their consent as is required by international and national law.

They pointed out that in recent years there have been an average of 146 pipeline leaks per year so that more intensive use of the pipeline would further worsen the ongoing environmental crisis. Furthermore, the expansion of fossil fuel consumption in critical and ecologically sensitive ecosystems would undermine the country’s climate commitments and represent a risk for financiers and investors…
