オーストラリア・ウェスタンシドニーに誕生する新たな都市「ブラッドフィールド・シティ・センター（Bradfield City Centre）」の第1号棟が完成しました。
「再生可能性・適応性・先住民文化との結びつきを重視する」という都市コンセプトを象徴する存在として、アジア、オーストラリア、アメリカ、イギリスにスタジオを構える、国際的なデザイン事務所 Hassellが設計しました。

新たな都市の最初の建築が示す、再生可能な未来への大胆な一歩
オーストラリア・ウェスタンシドニーに位置するダラグにおいて、100年以上ぶりに誕生する新都市「ブラッドフィールド・シティ・センター」の第1号棟が公開された。
Hassellが設計したこのプロジェクトは「静止する都市」ではなく「積極的に還元する都市」を目指すものであり、再生可能性、適応力、そして先住民文化との深い結びつきを基盤とした都市像が提示されている。

この第1号棟は先進製造準備施設（AMRF）のステージ1を収容し、適応性・循環性・土地とのつながりを通じてイノベーションを促進する拠点となる。
ニューサウスウェールズ州政府が描く先進製造技術とイノベーションの未来像への大きな一歩であり、オーストラリアで最も新しい、持続可能かつ連携する都市の進行をリアルタイムで示す象徴的存在である。

ブラッドフィールド開発当局CEO兼AMRF議長のケン・モリソン（Ken Morrison）は次のように語る。

循環性、再生可能デザイン、そして土地とのつながり
緑豊かな空間に囲まれている第1号棟は、カンバーランド平原と地域の自然水系からインスパイアされた開放的で歓迎的な構造をもち、住民、労働者、訪問者が集う場として機能する。
循環性と適応性の原則を体現したこの建物は、モジュール式の「キット・オブ・パーツ」として製造され、解体、拡張、移設が可能に設計されている。これにより、未来の都市の進化するニーズに対応できるレジリエンスと柔軟性を確保している。
ウェストガースは次のように続ける。
「再配置と再利用が可能な構造は、建物の長寿命化と適応性を保証し、都市の循環性へのコミットメントを体現している。」

建物は、建築と自然の境界を曖昧にする色調と素材を使用し、土地に優しく溶け込むように設計されている。版築やリサイクルタイルといった自然素材を使用し、廃棄物を最小限に抑え、資源のライフサイクルを延長するシステムを組み合わせることで、持続可能性と循環型経済の原則へのコミットメントが強化されている。
先住民文化の研究・デザイン機関Djinjamaの知見を反映した第1号棟は、カンバーランド平原に位置するその場所を尊重し、人工環境と自然環境の調和を創造するプロジェクトである。

未来に向けた新たな基準
本プロジェクトは「なぜ依然として持続不可能な建物を造り続けるのか」という問いに対する1つの答えである。
ウェストガースは次のように語る。

BRADFIELD CITY CENTRE’S FIRST BUILDING UNVEILED: A BOLD STEP TOWARD A REGENERATIVE FUTURE
Dharug Country (Western Sydney), Australia – What if our future cities didn’t just stand still but actively gave back — regenerative, adaptable and deeply connected to First Nations culture. That’s the design vision behind Hassell’s First Building for Bradfield City Centre in Western Sydney, Australia’s newest city in over a century.
Designed by international multidisciplinary design firm Hassell, the First Building, housing Stage 1 of the Advanced Manufacturing Readiness Facility (AMRF), will foster innovation through its adaptability, design circularity and connection to Country.
As the first completed building in Australia’s first new city in 100 years, this milestone marks a step forward in the New South Wales State Government’s vision for a dynamic future in advanced manufacturing and innovation. The unique workplace will incubate innovative manufacturing projects and demonstrate the real-time progress of Australia’s newest sustainable, connected city.
Ken Morrison, CEO Bradfield Development Authority and AMRF Chair said: “Bradfield City Centre is one of the biggest economic development projects ever undertaken in Australia.
The First Building’s innovative design sets the benchmark for a vibrant, modern city that will build a stronger future for Western Sydney.
Housing the Advanced Manufacturing Readiness Facility, it will also strengthen the Australian manufacturing industry and create new opportunities for high value jobs and a stronger economy for the people of Western Sydney.”
Liz Westgarth, Hassell Managing Director and Principal in Charge of the project, comments: “As Bradfield City Centre takes shape, the First Building is a bold statement about what’s possible. It sets a strong benchmark for how Bradfield will develop – great design, sustainable and honouring Country. It’s more than a building — it’s a living example of how we can transform our cities and our lives.”
Circularity, Regenerative Design and Connection to Country
Inspired by the Cumberland Plain and the area’s natural waterways, the structure is open, inviting and surrounded by green spaces where residents, workers and visitors can gather.
Embodying the principles of circularity and adaptability, the building is fabricated as a modular ‘kit of parts’ and designed to be disassembled, expanded, or even relocated – ensuring it is resilient and responsive to the evolving needs of the future city.
“A kit-of-parts construction that can be reconfigured and reused ensures the building’s longevity and responsiveness to Bradfield’s future needs, representing the city’s commitment to adaptability and circularity,” said Westgarth.
The building is designed to sit softly on the land, using a colour palette and materials that blur the line between built form and nature. Natural materials, including rammed earth and recycled tiles, paired with systems designed to minimise waste and extend the life cycle of resources, reinforce a commitment to sustainability and circular economy principles.
Informed by First Nations cultural research and design agency, Djinjama, the First Building is a project deeply embedded in Country, honouring its location on the Cumberland Plain by creating a harmonious connection between built and natural environments.
A New Standard for the Future
As an industry, we need to ask ourselves a hard question: why are we still producing the same unsustainable buildings?
“The First Building proves that you can innovate, that you can create something extraordinary for a public, government project. It’s time to move forward, to embrace new ideas and to show that sustainability and great design belong together. And the First Building is our proof,” said Westgarth.
Serving as a catalyst for high-value jobs, skills development and collaborative partnerships between industry, government and academia, the First Building embodies Bradfield City Centre’s future-focused ambitions, where the built environment and nature come together to create a dynamic space for all to thrive.
“We’ve made ambitious commitments to sustainability and resilience in Bradfield. First Building, designed to address climate impacts now and into the future, is just the beginning,” said Morrison.
