[ワシントン ８日 ロイター] – トランプ米大統領は８日、連邦政府による首都ワシントン（コロンビア特別区）の統治を検討していると述べた。また、ニューヨーク市長選の有力候補に対する嫌悪感からニューヨークでも同様の措置を取る可能性を示唆した。
トランプ氏はホワイトハウスでの閣議で、ワイルズ大統領首席補佐官が、ワシントンを米国の５１番目の州にすることを支持するバウザー市長と緊密に連絡を取り合っていると述べた。
バウザー氏の事務所はコメントを控えた。
コロンビア特別区では議会が予算を管理するが、ホームルール法により、有権者が市長と市議会を選出する。トランプ氏が統治するには、議会がこの法律を廃止する法案を可決することが必要になる見込みだ。
トランプ氏は「われわれなら、とてもうまく運営できる。最高の人物を任命する。犯罪は最小限に抑えられる。正直なところ、検討中だ」と語った。
トランプ氏はこれまでにもワシントンについて政権が統治すべきという考えを示している。
また、ニューヨーク市長選に向けた民主党予備選で勝利したゾーラン・マムダニ氏について、「大惨事」と評し、同市についても立て直すと発言。「ニューヨークのために何かをするつもりだ。何かはまだ言えないが、ニューヨークを再び偉大な街にするつもりだ」と語った。
