[ジュネーブ １２日 ロイター] – ベセント米財務長官は１２日にスイスのジュネーブで開いた記者会見で、貿易協定締結を目指す交渉相手国としてスイスを優先して扱う方針を明らかにした。
米国と中国による１０、１１両日の協議の場をスイスが提供し、予想外の成功を収めたことを受けた発言。一方で、対米対抗策を整えつつある欧州連合（ＥＵ）に対しては強くけん制した。
トランプ米政権が４月２日に発表した「相互関税」では、スイス製品の輸入関税率は上乗せ分を含めて３１％に及び、ＥＵの２０％、英国の１０％を上回る。スイス政府に激震が走り、スイス大手企業が相次いで大がかりな対米投資に乗り出す方針を打ち出していた。
記者会見でベセント長官は、スイスの国際的な中立性が揺らいでいるとの見方や中東湾岸諸国の台頭が見られる中、仲介役スイスの将来について考えを問われた際、「英国とスイスは貿易協定締結（に向けた協議）の最前列に躍り出たが、ＥＵははるかに遅れている」と述べた。
会見に同席した米通商代表部（ＵＳＴＲ）のグリア代表もスイスを持ち上げ、「全てが非の打ちどころないままに進んだ。関係者以外には重要ではないように思えるかもしれないが、スイス政府が提供してくれた交渉環境は週末の（米中間の）合意に大きく貢献した」と述べた。
