米上院、駐カナダ大使人事承認　元下院議員のホークストラ氏

[ワシントン９日ロイター] – 米議会上院は９日、トランプ大統領が駐カナダ大使にピート・ホークストラ氏を指名した人事を賛成多数で承認した。

ホークストラ氏は元共和党下院議員で、駐オランダ大使を務めた経験もある。

米国とカナダの関係は、トランプ氏の関税政策や「カナダ併合」発言などを巡って、近年にないほど緊迫している。

トランプ氏は繰り返し、カナダは米国の５１番目の州になるべきと口にしてきた。

この問題についてホークストラ氏は、３月に開催された上院外交委員会における指名承認公聴会で、カナダを独立した主権国家とみなすと明言した。
