［ワシントン ２７日 ロイター］ – トランプ米大統領は２７日、国連大使にエリーズ・ステファニク下院議員（共和党）を充てる人事案を撤回した。共和党は下院で僅差で過半数となっているため、同氏が国連大使に就任し議員辞職した場合に議席数の差が縮まるためという。
トランプ氏はソーシャルメディアへの投稿で「議会における共和党の議席を全て維持することが不可欠だ。非常に僅差の多数派なので、その議席を狙う他の誰かに渡すつもりはない」とした。
ステファニク氏はトランプ氏に近く、昨年１１月の大統領選でのトランプ氏勝利から１週間足らずで指名されていた。
人事案は１月３０日に上院外交委員会で承認され、上院本会議の承認も問題はないと予想されていた。
ステファニク氏はＦＯＸニュースで、２７日にトランプ氏と会話したとし、「（大統領の）腹心の１人という意味で下院のリーダーであることを誇りに思い、今後もそうあり続ける」と述べた。
トランプ氏が代わりに誰を指名するかは不明。同氏は「国連で良い仕事をできる人は他にもいる」と投稿した。
下院の議席は共和党２１８、民主党２１３、空席４。共和党は２０１７年の「トランプ減税」の延長などを目指している。
