トランプ氏はフロリダ州パームビーチの私邸「マール・ア・ラーゴ」で行った記者会見で、トルコの軍事力は「戦争で疲弊していない」とした上で、「現在のシリアには多くの不確定要素がある。トルコがシリアの鍵を握るだろう」と述べた。
米国は現在、過激派に対する抑止力としてシリア東部に推定９００人の部隊を駐留させている。トランプ氏はこの部隊の将来について明確な回答を避け、代わりにトルコ軍の強さとトルコのエルドアン大統領との良好な関係を強調。「エルドアン氏と良好な関係を構築した。同氏は強力な軍隊を築き上げた」と語った。
