By AHM Anwarul Karim, (A Journalist based in Dhaka, Bangladesh):
Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) has become the prestigious film festival in Asia. Not only Asia, TIFF has developed into a major festival among the major festivals beside Cannes, Venice and Berlin. TIFF looks forward to even a larger number of submissions from around the world. The 30th Tokyo International Film Festival will take place October 25-November 3, 2017 for 10 days in Tokyo, JAPAN.

TIFF has already proud that their competition section has been showing many outstanding films created by up-and-coming directors as well as premieres of works by prestigious filmmakers from around the world.

In 2016, TIFF honored to receive 1,502 films from 98 countries and regions. Sixteen excellent films were screened after pre-selection and The Bloom of Yesterday (Germany) directed by Chris Kraus won the Tokyo Grand Prix. Submission films for 2017 TIFF have been closed in July 14th.

The Tokyo International Film Festival started in 1985. The event was held biennially from 1985 to 1991 and annually thereafter. Along with the Shanghai International Film Festival, it is one of Asia’s competitive film festivals, and the only Japanese festival accredited by the FIAPF. The awards handed out during the festival have changed throughout its existence, but the Tokyo Sakura Grand Prix, handed to the best film, has stayed as the top award. Other awards that have been given regularly include the Special Jury Award and awards for best actor, best actress and best director. In recent years, the festival’s main events have been held over one week in late October, at the Roppongi Hills development. Events include open-air screenings, voice-over screenings, and appearances by actors, as well as seminars and symposiums related to the film market.
