小林亜星は1932年に東京の渋谷に生まれた。父は医師であり、このあとを継ぐべく彼も慶應義塾高等学校から慶應義塾大学医学部へ進学した。
しかし彼自身は医師になることに興味がなく、音楽に熱中し転部の末に卒業、このことを親に知られ勘当されることになる。
その後彼は一般職への就職を経験するが、音楽への情熱止みがたく、すぐに退社し服部正に師事して本格的に作曲の道に入った。
師の服部正はそれほど弟子に直接指導をするタイプではなかったそうだが、そこですぐに彼は頭角を現し、CM音楽で出世、業界きっての売れっ子作曲家となっていった。
彼の活動は音楽だけにとどまらず、役者、コメンテーターとしてもテレビに出演し、その大きな体と屈託のない笑顔、そして時には真っ赤になって怒るなど、喜怒哀楽を素直に表現しお茶の間にも親しまれた。
彼の音楽のメインフィールドは歌謡曲とCMミュージック、劇伴作品であり純音楽は殆ど書かなかったが、子供のための作品に関してはその中にあって例外と言えるだろう。
子供向けのピアノ曲、連弾曲、児童合唱、同様や校歌などを複数手掛けており、特に児童合唱曲「未知という名の船に乗り」は、歌謡曲での名コンビである作詞家の阿久悠と制作され、NHKコンクールの課題曲として演奏されると、一気に人気気曲となり、多くの子供達に歌われる名曲となった。
最近はテレビで見ることもなくなり、どうしたのかと思っていた矢先、2021年5月30日に心不全のため亡くなったとのニュースが飛び込んできた。
一つの時代が終わったと感じるニュースが多い昨今だが、また一人偉大な音楽家が鬼籍に入ってしまったことは残念でならない。
今回はそんな小林亜星氏を偲んで、彼の書いた子供のための連弾曲を紹介する。
機関車をテーマにした曲で、ツイスト風のビートとブルース進行の楽しい曲である。

Asei Kobayashi was born in Shibuya, Tokyo in 1932. His father was a doctor, and in order to follow in his father’s footsteps, he went to Keio High School and then to Keio University School of Medicine.
However, he was not interested in becoming a doctor, and instead transferred to the Faculty of Economics, where he graduated with a passion for music. His parents found out about this and disowned him.
After that, he went to work as a civil servant, but his passion for music was unstoppable, and he soon left the company to study under Tadashi Hattori and started composing music in earnest.
His teacher, Tadashi Hattori, was not the type to give direct guidance to his pupils, but he quickly made a name for himself there and rose through the ranks in commercial music to become one of the most successful composers in the industry.
His activities were not limited to music, but he also appeared on TV as an actor and commentator, and his big body, carefree smile, and sometimes red-faced anger made him a favorite among viewers.
His main field of music was songs, commercials, and theatrical works, and he rarely wrote pure music, but his works for children were an exception.
In particular, the children’s chorus piece “Board a ship named Unknown” was created with lyricist Yu Aku, a famous duo in the songwriting field, and when it was performed as a theme song for the NHK contest, it quickly became a popular song and a classic sung by many children.
Just as I was wondering what happened to him, I heard that he passed away on May 30, 2021 due to heart failure.
There are many news these days that make us feel that an era has come to an end, and it is a pity that another great musician has passed away.
In memory of Mr. Kobayashi, I would like to introduce a series of pieces for children written by him.
The theme of this piece is locomotives, and it is a fun piece with a twisted beat and blues progression.
