Mars Red deserved far more attention than it got but I have to say I’m glad to have experienced one of the more memorable vampire stories I’ve ever seen.

Easily one of the best take on vampires the world of anime has seen so it's a shame not more watched it. Let me know your thoughts on this week's episode down below, drop a like to help promote the video and subscribe if you're new around here.
Mars Red is definitely for a more mature audience. Honestly, I'm surprised how much I liked it and appreciate the art part of it – the animation style, the writing, the play element integration. I think I'm getting a bit old and starting to appreciate the finer things in life I guess 😀
Alot of ppl really missing out 10/10
And so the curtain fall on this really Truly good and underrated series. Whiles its not for everyone with its stage like play and theme it really is interesting and great ride. Made got back his sense in the end and Kurusu took up his mantle and stayed human while being vampire.
That final battle is top-notch and sad at the same time.
Overall, very enjoyable show!
Although it's over and I won't be nearly as excited on Mondays anymore, I'm happy Mars Red is leaving us in a very satisfying manner. It looks like all the remaining cast got to carry on into the modern era in their own ways (sans Aoi and Shunnosuke of course) and by 2021 the time for curing (or at least curbing) vampirism can't be far off! I'm still craving an OVA in the end, but 13 episodes gave us the story we needed see, and some things are better off a mystery no matter how curious I am.
Thank you so much for sticking with this series despite the lack in popularity. It's not for everyone, but it really deserves a spotlight – I'll be remembering it for many years as such a unique story, and quite possibly the best take on vampires I've ever had the pleasure of enjoying. You're one of my favorite reviewers who always has such good and thoughtful things to say, so having you cover it was especially wonderful.
Wooo!!!! Gonna miss Mars Red…
I'll be rewatching this in the near future, for sure. I think there's a lot to be absorbed in the first few episodes where I wasn't yet accustomed to the show's storytelling. I'm not into vampires or theater, but I appreciated this show a lot, to the point where I've been watching it before new Odd Taxi or Eternity on Mondays. I had no idea this was just gonna be 13 episodes! 86, Vivy, now Mars Red 🙁
This was one of my favorite anime's of the season: I really enjoyed the art and scenery, it reminded me of Tower Of God art-wise. The only thing the 13th episode was missing and should have been added to the post-credits scene about where Nakajima ended up, last we saw of him he was in a jail cell.
So sad it ended but honestly one of the most underrated series of 2021.
This show had it all and it's a shame it didn't get as popular as it should have but maybe in a couple of years once the cult following starts spreading the word, it will get the recognition it deserves.
A conclusive ending and I feel satisfied that everything and everyone got their conclusions even if they were good or bad.
Very fun show to watch and I don't regret it one bit…
We've been very lucky this season with 12-13 episodes series sticking the landing, Mars red and vivy being great exemples. The biggest problem with anime is that most ending suck, but I really liked how Mars red ended, will be my go to recommendation for vampire stories
Dang I had a hunch Maeda wasn't going to make it when I noticed the manga cover has Kurusu on it, not Maeda. At first I was sad because Maeda was such a good character but the way it ended with the music, his realization and final message, and finally laid to rest next to Misaki's mark. Really beautiful. Anyone read the Manga? Is it the same? Different?
So underappreciated
Really glad I found this anime through your reviews. It has been quite the experience and for some reason this show makes me feel really nostalgic ^^
Maeda definitely was confused on whether it was real or a dream and i think at some point he knew he was a vampire but he didn’t want to live as one and thus hoped he was going to be killed by Kurusu. Funny thing is that I noticed the intentional ambiguity when he says Kurusu because it sounds similar to the Japanese word for kill Kurose so Kurusu was on edge. Seems like Kurusu got strength from her to fight the soldiers off. The ending was also poetic when there was a speech so it ended very much theatrical
Best vampire anime since Hellsing
I saw it when it first came out on Funimation im really glad i did.
maeda's memories of everyone was a nice touch to this finale. defrott is my fav character in this series, next to maeda. its sad what happened to him but thats the point of this story..and it also introduced me to the tale of salome and jokanaan, im not familliar with the story but it seems to be popular in literature. its a good vampire story. def not for the mainstream audience.
I also like the phrase he said before engaging the vampires because it’s well thought out in a way if a real cop were to meet a new vampire but it’s never been said like that. Also with the MAPPA showcase, I feel like MAPPA is really overworking the staff with that many projects. And Madhouse isn’t dead, people just ignored Chihayafuru, No Guns Life and they animate with a better schedule now
Just finished my binge of the second half of it. Great anime and although I perfer the first half of it and not so much the second half as much since part of the reason I loved it a lot was the focus on Maeda and his character which apart from really the last EP it didn't really have for the second half and focused more on the Shonen like main character which wasn't bad but I just kept wanting more of Maeda to see his thought process even more. The final episode was just phenomal for me and I guess he would end up dying in the same place as Misaki in a similar way but it still emotional for that to happen.
Was waiting for all the episodes to come out first, just started episode 1 now. Already enjoying it, love the art style as well
Both jouran and this went pretty under the radar. At least Jouran did get clips promoted on the CR youtube channel. Animation wise, it beats Mars Red out of the water but the plot is more nuanced for Mars Red. Jouran's was more simple but I think more effective. The story didn't feel like it jumped around a lot. This would probably be a 7 out of 10 and Jouran would be a 7.5 out of 10. They are both good but not great.
While definitely not for everyone, Mars Red was a pretty good vampire anime for those that were able to get into it. It gets hate for so many reasons such as but not limited to the aspect ratio, animation, and "plot holes." For those that were able to appreciate it for what it was, it was a good ride. The theatrical elements were probably only used because of what the source material was, but I would love to see other anime take a shot at it.
It might not be the place to be mentioned at the end of an unrelated anime, but The Case Study of Vanitas looks like another promising vampire anime! And from studio Bones, no less! I'm looking forward to it.
Thematically, I like how the betrothed who never really met, were able to become intertwined in death.
I guess since we didn't see Nakijima anymore, he probably shot himself in that cell.
I know this has nothing to do with the main story, but given that Defrott was shown with a modern background, I wonder how the vampires fared during WW2, especially during the atomic bombs dropping. I don't expect/want a continuation or anything, but it's fun to speculate.
Enexpected ending, great review thanks!
yo how yall feelin bout the Wonder Egg Priority special finale episode?
I absolutely agree with you man!
It's beautiful and well crafted..
I was having a hard time understanding Maeda's flashbacks but when he remembers Kurusu and his final line, it hits me hard..
I really enjoyed this anime
Shakespeare, Sofocles, Virgilio… damn masterspiece, that romeo and juliette ending… The greeks already wrote that a good tragedy is the best play. I love good endings, but this thing was just the best amount of bittersweet.
are u making a vid of what you'll be watching in the summer season? your reviews have become the standard next step after watching the episode haha
Did Shutaro die?
at first i was unsure about the anime but as time went on i realized that i just have to watch it through a different perspective. it shouldn't be held to the same standards as other anime since it's based off of a play, so the storytelling is very different and theatrical. if you look at it through that perspective then i think you can enjoy it much more for what it is. i hope that makes sense lol.
to add to that, i also thought that some scenes were really random and over the top, like the earthquake and kurusu's flying machine, but I remember that theater is supposed to be dramatic so it fits!
Have you watched Odd Taxi?
Just finished. So damn good.
I was super hyped at first but then it became underwhelming with how fast paced it became with a lot of unanswered questions left .
This is great to see MARS RED love here!!! It truly deserves it and I thought this final episode was amazing, so glad to see all these positive comments for the show 🙂
Hi just wanted to know others views on what made you love the show. I really went in excited and no doubt the theatrical approach I enjoyed very much and the art style. For me though, I felt like the show didn’t accomplish making me like the characters, there were moments where it felt long and nothing was happening and felt like I skipped a few episodes because I couldn’t really vouch for them with the big decisions they made
