Hayao Miyazaki’s Academy Award-winning animated feature film comes to life in this first-ever stage adaptation, full of dazzling sets, captivating musical numbers, and wondrous puppets of beloved characters. Adapted and directed by Tony Award-winner John Caird (Les Misérables), two unique casts and performances were filmed during the show’s acclaimed 2022 run at Tokyo’s historic Imperial Theatre, featuring Kanna Hashimoto and Mone Kamishiraishi as Chihiro.

STUDIO GHIBLI FEST is back in theaters and bigger than ever – highlighting all ten of Hayao Miyazaki’s iconic animated films with Studio Ghibli, as well as the first-ever North American screenings of SPIRITED AWAY: Live On Stage, featuring two separate full performances filmed during the production’s acclaimed run in Tokyo last year.

It’s a year of celebrating animation master Hayao Miyazaki with the first-ever nationwide retrospective of his Studio Ghibli works, including several anniversary titles: the 35th Anniversary screenings of My Neighbor Totoro, 15th Anniversary screenings of Ponyo, and 10th Anniversary screenings of The Wind Rises. STUDIO GHIBLI FEST 2023 has also added more screening dates than ever before to meet increased fan demand.

Each of the 10 animated features will be shown in both original Japanese and English dubbed versions and will include exclusive selections from the documentary series 10 Years With Hayao Miyazaki.

  2. 感動。本当に感動。素晴しかった。最近のアニメのミュージカルは本当に素晴しい。見た目は勿論、声も衣装も、雰囲気も、アニメに忠実に似ていて素晴しい。更に音楽も歌声も素晴しい。編集のできるアニメの実写版よりも、更に上をいく完成度。1万円ちょっとで観れるのは安いくらい。1万以上の素晴しい経験。ミュージカルの公演を生で見れるのは一生の中で一瞬だけ。これからも色んなアニメのミュージカルを見ていきたい。

  7. The actress (Mari Natsuki) who played the role of Yubaba in the play is the same person who actually did the voice for the anime.

  10. It was really interesting as an American watching this in the theater with the subtitles because I felt like I was watching an opera in a way. And in a way this is like an opera because it was done on the same scale as an opera. What’s interesting is that John Caird who directed this also directed lots of operas as well as the original London Cast of Les Mis which has been compared to an opera even though it’s still considered a musical
