Sordo’s Hyundai Goes Up in Flames 🔥 WRC Rally Japan 2022

Elfyn Evans headed Thierry Neuville by the narrowest of margins as Friday’s brutal opening leg cut holes through the field at FORUM8 Rally Japan.
Just 3.0sec split the pair after the first full day of action on technical mountain roads around Aichi, with Evans’ GR Yaris holding strong on the home soil of his Toyota Gazoo Racing squad.
Japan is back on the FIA World Rally Championship calendar for the first time since 2010 and the all-new asphalt event has already claimed the scalps of multiple frontline drivers. Dani Sordo’s Hyundai i20 N was the first to go – his car reduced to a sorry-looking shell after catching fire in the opener.

2. T Neuville / M Wydaeghe BEL Hyundai i20 N +3.0sec

    That dust Tanak mentioned basically eliminated Kajto from the rally :'( Rally Japan turns out to be one of the hardest if not the hardest asphalt rally this year.

    Breen has had a truly shocking year. Is he overdriving the car? Is the pressure of being team leader and the need for a result too much? Regardless, it's awful seeing him, and M Sport have such a terrible season after starting with so much promise.

    One of the most difficult stages in the world for sure. It's been more than a decade since the last Rally Japan but that was in a completely different course in the North were gravel persists. Now, it's in the South where it's mainly asphalt. The unpredictable weather, uneven road conditions, damp leaves hindering grip and the narrow roads keeps all the competitors in check. It gives this track constant variation which is why its difficult to drive and to go all out. Definitely one of the most entertaining to watch.
